I too suspect previous tyre damage.

But i'd also get the rear brakes checked out for any grabbing issues in particular.

Looks like those tyres recieved a great shove whilst stationary. Stripping the tread across the contact patch of part of the circumference.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are "part worns" off an accident damaged car.

The noise will have been the tyre carcass failing, either due to specific damage, or just uneven wear.

A similar thing happened to me with my M-B CLS. A strange rumbling noise for a bit at motorway speeds, then tyre pressure warning and a trip to the hard shoulder. Tyre was completely shredded.

In my case, the factory geo means that it wears the very inside edge of the tyre (actually quite difficult to see without really getting under the car) through to the cords in places. I'm now alert to it, so have them checked regularly. Annoyingly the rest of the tyre normally has loads of tread!

If it was a geo issue I would expect to see it all around the tyre. This looks localised.

OP mentions the car is a new Velar, but 3 years old, I wouldn't put it past an unscrupulous dealer sticking some part worns on it.

All tyres are part worn as soon as you drive away for the first time, whether they are or not is not relevant, they were quite clearly (assuming both failed in the same way) badly damaged to the carcass & have failed in use.

Surely the relevance is if they were bought as part worns with unknown provenance?

So you think you know the provenance of the used tyres that were on your car when you bought it do you?

Absolutely not, that’s why I change them when a car is purchased

And you are not the OP, so that is not relevant to the question.
