Ive got a pair of shocks, top mounts to do on my 2007 Transporter and am trying decide to do the springs or not. The present ones still have all their paint and look ok.
Would you do the springs as well for the sake of another £80?
Gut feeling is yes.

If the springs are still intact and coatings undamaged, I don't really see any reason to change them. They are probably better quality than new ones anyway!

Have you checked on the owner's forum whether there's any reason for a spring upgrade when replacing OE shocks?

Few weeks ago had a leaking rear shocker on my Subaru, self levellers and only available from Subaru @ some £500 each and that was 5 years ago, to replace with standard shocks one must also replace with stiffer springs too to maintain ride height etc, scooby forum was invaluable for info and part numbers etc, new KYB Japan made springs and shocks now across the back for some £230 the lot.

Nothing like that applies with your vehicle?

Not really, its just a workhorse with standard suspension, the problem with VW is that they have multiple springs available due to weight loadings etc so it can become a challenge getting the right ones if you dont go to the dealer.
I will probably take the risk and leave them alone.
