I've just attempted to fit a new set of rear discs and pads to my car (Porsche 944 - 1988 2.5 lux), and I've discovered that the pads are too thick to re-fit - even with the pistons pushed all the way in, the new pads seem to be about 0.5mm too thick to fit.

Anyone got any bright ideas how to solve this?

I'm thinking I could just swap the pads for another set, but it was mail order and I need them fitted for the 17th so it might be a bit tight.

Other option is perhaps taking a belt sanderto the pads to take just enough off that they fit, or is that a really bad idea?

Actually, turns out that it's not the pads that were too thick, but me. They fit fine if you put them in in the right order and ensure that the little lug on the caliper is located exactly in the socket on the pad

Boy do I feel dumb (not to mention relieved)

The old mechanics trick of always compare the old & new parts (pads, cables.. etc) do it as soon as you remove it .. and remember how it came out ..

Brakes - do one side at a time - then you still have the other side to look at..

Saves loads of hastle later

Wise words indeed - and I did that when I did the front brakes - why the hell didn't I do the same for the back brakes?
