As per the subject, I'm trying to find anywhere to buy a Howe Steering Quickener like this:-

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Howe-Racing-5220-St...

Also I hear they are not road legal, what's the reason behind this? Not CE marked? Something else?

TIA.

www.milneroffroadracing.com sell them, or the Coleman version.

I can't see how they can be illegal, they are a couple of gears, not much different to a rack and pinion.

I know some of these things are just a smaller gear running in a larger drum gear and will only have a few gear teeth in contact.

That type isn't going to be very strong and I've heard offroad 4x4 Landie owners saying they don't last long before the force going through them rips teeth off and they fail.

I can see why that type aren't approved for normal road use.

Ones like the 1.5:1 Howe one use a much stronger mechanism so they should be fine!

Anyway, many many thanks for the info, I'll be on my back in the drivers footwell tomorrow figuring out if there's enough room for one, and if there is I'll order it Monday.

Project "I'm bored and I've fallen off a bike one too many times so lets try something fast with 4 wheels = M3" is coming along nicely!
