steering has tight spots......... Volvo V70 P1...2.5 petrol

My future Mother in-law rang last night for me to have a look at her car as she said the steering was "sticky"

the steering feels tight every 1/4 turn of the wheel..it is the same when stationary and with front wheels in the air, there is a slight groan from the steering as you turn it through the tight spot then it moves free to the next 1/4 turn and tight again...etc etc

does this sound like the Rack is shot or the Pump is on the way out?

there are no fluid leaks and fluid level is correct

I couldn't really see last night in the dark, her car is kept outside and it was lashing it down so didn't do much ferreting about

will have a proper look in the daylight tomorrow
