My latest aquisition is an unmodified mondeo 2.2 st which seems competant, are there any sensible tricks that can enhance the car without wasting it

You can remap and de-cat them, frees them up very nicely. The are really problematic though, compared to the V6 version. Failed EGR valves, DMF's, injectors all cause problems are none are really cheap to fix, all will be put under more stress when you increase the power so watch out.
