Been getting some odd sounds from the brakes recently, which are DS2500 pads, which today culmanated in a nasty crunch & then graunching each time I used the brakes. Clearly the pads were shot, strange after only doing 4000ish miles.

Take a look at the state of them & see how many problems you can see.

Fiat 500 1.2.

Discs are fine (apart from the scoring where the friction material has come adrift from the back plate.

The ones that haven't broken up look excessively worn for the claimed mileage assuming normal driving.
Did you fit the pads yourself?
Are they definitley the right ones?
Genuine parts or not? There can sometimes be issues with the metal backs of none OE pads being slightly too big to fit the caliper & they then stick which means they stay in contact with the disc. It does look like the backers on yours are bent.
Any faults with the calipers?

They are Ferodo DS2500 pads, fitted myself, they are the correct pattern, thickness etc (checked carefully when fitting as I didn't trust the supplier).

They were free the move within the caliper when fitted, the backing on two of the pads is VERY bent, on the inboard side of each disc. I have e-mailed Ferodo to see what they say.

I'm not too worried about the mileage as they have done a dozen laps of the ring, more worried about the breaking up & bending.

Suffice to say, std discs & pads now fiied & braking performance is the best it's ever been.

I did wondersmile
I also wonder if excess heat has enabled the metal of the pads to deform due to softening?
Some years ago I had the discs of a Cavalier glowing red hot but I don't recall any subsequent issues with the brakes.

I have seen the crumbling material on DS2500's before when they have been really cooked, though they weren't quite that bad. Never seen the backing plates bent like that though.

Those backing plates have got to have been jammed into the caliper for that to happen.

That's what I'd say, but they were free when I took it all apart.

Not very likely in a 69hp Fiat 500 though.

Makes no difference, I could get the Cooper S front discs glowing on the front on 850 mini with 34bhp.

They would be free when you took them out as they are now bent and hence shorter end to end.

Happend to me in a corsa b. Sticky piston ment the pad was in contact always. Rim was red hot, left it to cool before even going near it.

They've been stuck. look at the wear pattern on the friction material.

Did you fit them originaly?

I think they've dropped out the runners some how just slightly at one end. To get one bent like that is unusual but two, & the same side of each brake, is highly doubtful. I don't know what Fiat 500 callipers are like but I'm guessing they are not highly advanced so I'm wondering if maybe when pumping the pedal back up it's been possible somehow for them to hook over the end of the slide & still be secured. I really don't think they've just simply been stuck.

I hope that makes sense. smile

Can we get a comparison with standard?
