Do swirl marks actually affect the value of a car? I'm not talking about normally visible scratches, I mean just swirl marks.

Most Muggles can't see them at all. Same with orange peel paint. A million BMW owners can't be wrong. hehe

Not necessarily, depends how bad they are.

If someone knows what they are, they know if they are just normal wash marring or if it's fked!

BMW are even offering enhanced swirls as an option on upcoming new models

Cars and cleaning...where do i start.

1. It's satisfying to know i've done the work myself. (Should put this on my CV tbh).
2. It's nice to know i've not paid someone
3. It's nice to know i've got something I can be good at
4. I love the products and selection process, it's pretty much detergent a lot of it but each has a "secret sauce" within.
5. Long term sustainability of my own car....i.e. it won't look like someone has scratched razor blades over it in 3 years
6. Cult followings like Detailing world and said YT videos...Ammo and Forensic detailing channels are really fantastic on dreary winter nights
7. Gives me some down time
8. Gives me something to talk to some people about with the same interests...

NEVER be shameful you detail

Never touch my cars but have them properly clear wrapped and ceramic coated when new.
Annual complete detail and weekly hand wash by a crew I trust. Even on the oldest cars (about 14 yrs) they are pretty much like new apart from a bit of leather and alcantara wear. I do keep a hacker (cayenne V8) for towing and dog transport, which gets run through the local machine wash and has a million scratches.

Takes way too long to do it myself and all of that effort is worse than a top grade professional.

I personally keep detailing to a normal level I think. Once or twice a year I do:

Rinse car
Wash with 2 bucket method and cheap Asdas own washing up liquid (to remove old wax etc)
Rinse
Wash again with 2 bucket method
Fallout remover, let sit 5 mins to turn purple
Rinse thoroughly
Use clay mitt to remove the leftovers
Rinse
Dry
Hand polish any obvious swirls
Apply panel wipe to selected panel
When dry add my Fusso99
Allow to dry slightly then buff off
Repeat on all panels
Apply tyre/rubber dressing where needed

All in takes about 4-6 hours, but after that washing the car is an absolute breeze and can be done in 15 minutes since the paint is like glass and Fusso just doesnt let water stick to it.
