My dad's ordered a BMW M140i and we've been offered 'Protect X' – which I gather is just a glorified paint sealant – free of charge.

I'm no detailing expert, but my worry is that the paint won't be properly prepared before the sealant is applied, meaning bad paint could be 'sealed in' or, at worst, further paint damage caused.

It also includes some kind of interior leather protection, although this is a bit less controversial.

We wouldn't have paid a penny for it, but it was free. So, should we take them up on it?

Just ask them for the product and apply it yourself?
Simple really.

In a word - no!

You've already identified the main reasons why not to proceed with this.

The product itself is an old school polymer sealant - very much left behind compared to the new breed of ceramic coatings from the like of Gtechniq and Gyeon in every measurable way, especially durability.

A new car detail including a ceramic coating by a respected detailer local to you would be the best way forward.

Things like glass sealant, leather & fabric protection can all be done by the aforementioned detailer.

cheers
