Hello,

Any suggestions on how to tackle this on an old shed that I'd like to keep on the road?

Is it saveable - not looking for factory finish just something at will keep it running for a bit longer.

Many thanks,

Unless there's a sharp edge on those arches, it's not an MOT failure yet.

all you can really do is clean them back with a grinder and fibre glass /filler until smooth and then rattle can it in ...if you want to keep it for years then it needs arches welding in and doing right which will cost more than what another shed will cost

Isn't this the very reason those chrome arches were invented for Merc's and BMW's?

That's not a shed! Thats an e39! As above though, grind it back with a flap wheel, bit of rust treatment then primer and a few coats of top coat and that'll be looking presentable enough. If your arches are that rusty though you may want (or not!) to take the sill covers off and have a look at the jacking points...

Thanks for replies.

Yes, it's e39 and mostly an okay running e39 530d manual tourer with some rust now showing in the usual places.

A few more photos showing the worst of the rust - the rest of it being okay. It's had some welding at the lifting points already.

The front wings can be replaced by patern parts, but rear arches are not something you can pickup parts for I wouldn't imagine?

Not sure if worth saving or should I really just move on before it becomes a money pit? Not using it for daily commuting but it is handy for shifting stuff to the tip and trips away. Appears to be worh half of nothing which makes we want to keep it all the more.

What's the collective PH opinion - worth keeping just for the "art of shedding" factor?

Many thanks,

Sorry to say but that’s toast, certainly not worth spending much money on!
Rust is generally worse underneath that it looks, tickle those arches with a grinder and there won’t be much left of the lip.

Do the front wings bolt on ?
Easy replacement if yes, otherwise £££ for cutting and welding.

How much MOT is left ?

Might be time to eBay it,spares or repair.

Thanks - yes the wings do just bolt on so (fairly easy) swap at £200 painted and fitted.

Rear arches are more of a worry - MOT due next month so will see how it goes - was just trying to understand what options might be.

It's worth more in spares than as a whole thing.

You need to get to a few body shops and see what their thoughts are (and prices); for me, some of it will be superficial and could be sanded back, filled and resprayed. But some of it looks like it'll need to be cut out and new metal welded in...

Unfortunately, on some E39s, chasing rust tends to go down the Forth Road Bridge line... You'll start and never stop!

For me, the rear boot lid, you'd be best finding one from a breakers yard that hasn't rusted like that and then get it resprayed and refitted...

Glacier Green/Grun? If so I have a passenger front wing & tailgate in that colour in a lot better condition.

If shedding...stick it in for test and see how much it'll cost just for basic roadworthiness.

If its a massive spend break or sell spares or repair.

Cosmetics are a secondary consideration.

Sadly beyond (economical) repair.

The jacking points will probably be very rusty. The rest is cosmetic but not really worth repairing.

Yes indeed that's the colour!

In for MOT mid may so if it does pass might take you up on the offer if parts are for sale.
