My V6 Mondeo is fitted with the 16" black chrome alloy wheels. I have noticed this problem on other cars fitted with these wheels, whereas the surface layer of, what i would assume is paint is gradully flaking off, revealing what looks like red oxide primer. The wheel isn't curbed or damaged in anyway, other than what i have already mentioned.
So my question is as the base layer seems sound, is it possible to buy the top coat metallic type paint and recoat it myself, or is it a pro. job only?

Not a straightforward repair, and the materials are expensive: best product (IMHO) is Alsacorp's Mirrachrome - see chromepaint.com
