I have noticed on some modern cars that there is a vent on the front guard just behind the wheel. It is about where the indicator repeater is. Some cars that I have seen this vent on are the new BMW Mini, BMW’s, Aston Martins and Range Rovers.

Is this vent for aerodynamics or for some sort of cooling?

Entirely pose value. The ones on the Range Rover Sport aren't even vents.

In the old days these were actually used for ventilation by allowing better throughflow of hot air, cars like Austin Healey's used them on their rally cars, check out web site http://ruscoe.net/haldane/ or google search 'Haldane 100' to see what i mean, it just so happens to be my own site
