Finally getting around to the final stages of 'thinking' about the paintwork of my restoration project. At the moment i have a car sitting in front of me with a mixture of brand new panels(in the black protective coating as you buy them)couple of panels with original 'keyed' bodywork and some panels showing flattened filler, original paint and small bare metal patches. So,question is what is the best, read easiest idiot proof high build primer that will go over the whole car to give me a good surface for me to flatten and paint?I emphasis the phrase 'idiot proof' once more!I painted the whole of a couple of my mates cars in the past with spray tins(i kid you not)and i have to say i done a cracking job so i'm really looking forward to doing this with the correct spray gear etc.I'll be doing it in 2K by the way.Any other general advice will be greatly appreciated too! Thanks!

Do you want a primer that you spray from an aerosol, or through the spray equipment you have for your 2k paintjob?

I use Dupont 1020R high build primer ,goes on nice and also flats down real nice and easy .
Also it can then be applied as a wet on wet primer , which again goes on easy as anything .

Hi, have a gel coat body panel. What is the best way to prepare this for spraying. Will it need keying all over before primer?
for best results would the panel have been better produced without a finished gelcoat to start with.

cheers

Key up the whole panel , like you would a normal body panel , then use an etching primer first, then a few good coats of normal primer ...
