Hi, I've been spraying for a bit now, with good results using an apollo turbine system.

Anyways, my boss lent me a compressor to try a conventional setup, I've bought an air regulator/filter to sit at the compressor, and a regulator with gauge to sit at the gun end of things. Now I'm setting up the pressure, it's reading 25 psi at the compressor, but 45 psi at the gun. The gun's max is 45 psi, and yesterday I tried spraying some 1k lacquer onto a bonnet I'm doing, and well, it wasn't the result I was expecting.

The paint literally spat out of the gun forming massive orange peel, so I'm reckoning that my pressure setup is wrong, or I need to thin the lacquer. The lacquer I'm using is RFU, ie ready for use, so shouldn't require thinning, so I'm more inclined to think the pressure setup is wrong.

It seems weird to me that pressure at the compressor is half that at the gun, I would have thought you would lose pressure the further away from the compressor you go, but I know nothing about setting these things up. It could be maybe atomisation setup I'm getting wrong, or airflow on the gun itself.

If anyone could shed some light on gun setup I'd really appreciate itsmile

Wouldn't of thought the pressure was to great , as on my regulator on the wall it reads 110 , i like as much air flow as possible .....
Make sure the gun is working properly , run some thinners through it to see if the fan looks good .
Could even be you haven't enough pressure at the gun.

You can't run with two gauges cranking down the pressure - the readings become very confused!

I'd recommend opening the regulator at the compressor fully open, then adjusting using just the regulator/gauge at the gun. There can be a significant drop over the length of the airline with a longer hose, so setting at the gun is always better.

Thanks guys, I tried it again today, opened the compressor regulator up full, and got it sorted at the gun. The lacquer came out lovely, with just some slight orange peel, so looks like I just had it set up wrong lol.

Thanks again!
