I have an airfed mask and suit and seperate compressors for the fun and feed in a different building, so happy to use whatever paints to do the job.

So, onto the wheels.

I want to just do them in a nice deep glossy shiny metallic silver all over.

Problem is with everything going waterborne I'm not sure what I can get or what is best anymore.

If I get a good celly base and build that up, can I use a two pack laquer over the top for longevity and deeper gloss?

Does anyone know what most normal alloy wheels are painted in? My BMW Z4 18" wheels almost have a pearl effect metallic look to them... is this just the metallic base with laquer, or is a pair of coats quite common on alloy wheel metallics before the clear?

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave

If you have a look through a site called "wheelpaints.co.uk"(not sure if im allowed to put in a direct link frown ) You will get the perfect colour, IIRC its Deutch silver for that specific alloy. You can buy solvent or WB, so you can take your pick. You will then be able to overcoat them with 2k clear.

Alloy repair/refurb (Off the car) is classed as an industrial coating therefor doesnt fall under the new legislation on car paint.

Ah thats handy info, thanks!

The aerosol bits look fairly handy for the priming (will probably take them right back/fill if needed (look ok but will be the odd nick)) and the base, but I will almost certainly do the best 2k hard glossy laquer I can get...

That said, the aerosol laquer says all the benefits of 2k, but without iso (ie, air dry)... I guess it just takes a while to fully harden before you can cut it back and polish it right up (ie, ideal since I'll be doing it DIY and can do that in the garage with a normal filtered mask not at the workshop with the paint gun/air fed mask)
Just if it's not really actually as good as 2k laquer then it's probably not the best idea for longevity of the recon.

PS, do you know what it means on the solvent Deustch Silver, when it says use VF to base, is that just a very fast drying build/primer to allow you to start work on the base coat quicker?

This is where my knowledge falls down, as I do such small amounts and every process is so very different depending on the products you choose!

Thanks again

VF is standard silver paint, but has metalic content, whereas the "deustch" has very little metalic flakes. Just makes it easier to cover as the deustch takes lots of coats to get a decent cover.
You dont have to use their VF, any silver will do.

If you have all the equipment id opt not to use the aerosols, and 2k from a gun would be preferable.
