just finished filling stone chips, 2500 wet n dried, medium polished and all is going well....

next is fine polish before wax but want to be sure I'm viewing results in best possible light to show any fine scratches, what do you guys use that shows up everything? I have a 600w halogen lamp on a stand would this be sufficient or is florescent best?

thanks for any pointers smile

Don't laugh but basic strip lighting....ie gas tubes as found at your local petrol station. Brutal white light.

Decent halogens are good too as used by professional detailers and builders.

There's no specific type of light which is better for highlighting swirls etc - light is light, aside from the colour temperature aspect, which is only necessary for colour matching by painters.
That said, the closer to noon daylight CTO lamps, the easier it is on the eye.

To that end, I would offer you look at a dozen or so flouros installed using the likes of Osram's 865 or 965 Lumilux tubes - plenty of light output, at a CTO close to natural daylight, and with a running draw of under 1kW for all 5' 58w tubes being on, compared to the twin 500w halogen sitelights.
Not as toasty come the colder days/nights, for sure, but you'll not have to reposition or trip over them when moving round the car(s).

One of those threads has a link to Osram UK and Stearn who are a reseller.
Use the Osram product info in Google or contact a local electrical wholesaler to see if they carry Osram in stock, or order in as and when.
I paid £2 from memory for the 4' 36w 865 in the kitchen, so a dozen or so 965's if you went for them, wouldn't cost much more than £3-4 a piece, plus the fittings and starters, if you're starting from scratch.
Osram also does a bit of a fancy ballast controller thing - which you can see on their site and in the Stearn pdf

sorry, not rigging up a garage, will actually be carrying it out under a huge lean to which has some good daylight, from your suggestions do you think if I throw the 600w halogen lamps in as well (x3) should give me a good mix for accurate viewing?

had a quick go this afternoon and it certainly made it look like it needed doing hehe

Halogen's are cheap, and nasty - especially the twin 500w site lights you can buy from B&Q for £30.
I prefer the Metal Halide (150w RX7 bulb type - not to be confused with the car of the same moniker!) ones, as you can see on www.thepolishingcompany.com

I'll take that as a compliment then, shall I?

Don't know which is potentially more embarrassing - being compared to Data, or knowing whom you're referring to.
