Hi Guys

I am moving over to Perth in a year or so, and am bringing my little BMW ZM Coupe for use on the track

Part of the deal to import into Oz is that we have to have owned the car for 12 months.

We are looking at perhaps bringing over another car which we would look to sell after we have been through all the import stuff, My question is, what make and model do we buy to bring over to make the most $

Cheers

Just a quick reply without much thought given, 911s are very expensive here, I would imagine there would be a decent market for them unlike more unusual stuff (eg a TVR)
There are currently 6 996 Carreras listed for sale here
carsales.com.au
ranging from $100k for a '98 to $190K for an '04.
No idea what they would cost in UK?

I think you will find that is is difficult to make money when importing vehicles. You will pay 20 - 30% import duty and tax. The vehicle is registered as an import and as such it is said are not worth the same as a local vehicle. Certainly worth bringing a car you wish to keep though.

If I were to import another car, then it would have to be a Fezza. The prices of 355's and 360's in the UK was nothing short of bargain basement, whereas here in Oz it's the total opposite. One must choose wisely though - low mileage and dry use only.

I am working out in Perth just now for a couple of weeks. I seriously thinking of moving over, stunning city. I too would take my BMW Z4. Have you looked into shipping costs from the UK? So if you have owned the vehicle at home for more than a year you don't have to pay import tax?

Also, what is insurance like for modified vehicles. My Z4 is supercharged with 370BHP.

On the other hand... I am also thinking about importing a HSV Ute back to the UK.... May go and see one this weekend, I guess it would just be VAT and shipping costs to add to the RRP price in the garage?

P.S. Sorry for crashing your thread

To personally import a Z4 from the Uk to Oz would cost around Au$13,000 - $18,000. Which includes import duty, shipping, gov charges.

Bit of a minefield with no easy answer to suit all vehicles - if importing be careful as you can get caught out but it can be worthwhile.

Best cars to import, depending on financial circumstances of course so maybe an F50 is your thing, are, IMHO, late model BMW, Audi, Merc's etc.

Cheers for all the replies and suggestions, This is the link I have found from Aus Government about importing cars, I cant find the bit where it costs a lot to import providing its your own car and you've had it registered in your name for 12 months +

www.dotars.gov.au/transport/safety/road/bulletin/importing.aspx#5.01

Though if I have missed the bit with the large costs, I would rather know now than in a years time

I think I might look at bringing over a M3 e46 Convertable, or a Porsche?

Thanks again, and any info/ suggestions most appreciated

what about if you have not owned for 12 months? i have just bought a Noble, and also just found out i am to lose my job in 16 weeks. I have a residency visa for Oz, and would love to se the Noble on the west coast, although doing the great ocean road in the Nob would be amazing!

Have just brought a Noble over from the UK to Adelaide and got it registered a couple of weeks ago. If you want to bring it in as a personal import you must have owned and run it for the 12 months previous to you landing in Oz.

AFAIK there is no way around the 12 month rule ( I enquired a few years ago). If you don't comply, that's it, end of, you simply cannot bring the car. A friends daughter had lived in England for over a year and moved back, bringing her car with her. The car ended up having to be sent back to England as she had been out of England for a few weeks during the year and therefore did not comply rolleyes

I have noticed that in Oz there are RULES RULES RULES which really made me angry I mean it's ment to be a laid back country and I am stunned at the rules there is just too many.. I mean I wouldn't want to get out bed incase I broke some kind of rule going to the shop to buy milk.. you can't buy milk on days ending in " Y " ekk!!

it's putting me off coming over , it really is...

I am looking to bring two cars with me I have owned both cars since 1999. I have been give 3 difference answers abut what I can and can't bring.. I am going to give up soon.. I mean these are classic cars that's why i own 2 of them and some spare parts... i have to pay TAX on the parts even though they are USED and only kept to keep the car on the road..!!! I've gone from I 'm moving and selling stuff to make the move easy to .. hold it .. I'm staying.. I like the people the sun the life style just not the silly rules.. TOO many of them

hi, i did a kind of personal import (the owner did) back in 2001, a 1997 Cerbie 4.2 and "we" paid 29k dollars in import duty. Worked out the proper way using original invoice and its value etc. Guy recently bought a 2002 Tuscan in and choose the other option - let them value it here. Had to cough up $8000 as they valued it at about $40k, due to lack of data to compare it too. I think i'd risk that way of doing it next time. nick

I would definately agree, having the car valued sight-unseen before arrival ended up saving me a huge amount in import duty.

They valued the car considerably lower due to the fact that it's a personal import and therefore potentially harder to sell, and also allowed the value to take account of any work declared as potentially needing done once the car arrived.

Ended up paying less than half of what i expected to.

having imported an Oz HSV Coupe into the UK I am now looking at taking the wife's SMART back to Oz when we return next year - not a performance car by any stretch but with the shipping paid by my emloyer and SMART's selling for AUD$15K++ in Oz (we paid £2600 2nd hand) I can't see how we'd lose? Because we have owned it for more than a year - how will the duty/tax etc be worked out? Is all I need the proof of what I paid for it or does it relate only to value when new? Any comments appreciated (not ones about our second car being a 600cc shopping trolley!)

hey julian
Is that an easy process?
Does one have to go and live there or can it be a visit. I come over every year to see my teenage son. I still have my Brit passport and family living there (not far from Oxford actually!). Can you advise me, either on here or direct to nick@creativepage.com.au
thanks mate.

sorry julian, i should have clarified....is it easy to import a car into UK. I'd do a HSV Monaro or ClubSport. Did you make much money? nick

It would be pointless buying a Monaro in Oz to take to England as you buy them cheaper there than we do here...
Same with the new Clubsport, if you option it to the spec of the VXR8 then import it to England (assuming you have to pay import duty, VAT etc) then it will cost you pretty much what Vauxhall are selling them for. But you wouldn't have a Vauxhall warranty.

so what could I make money on? any ideas? how about taking the rust-free angle? Import a desirable old 60's Merc SL? Aston? E type? spend $50-75k here and sell for £40-50k? Impossible?
