I've read a few times about sealing the rear quarter windows, but what about the black trim that is painted on the glass before the sealant??

My passenger side window really needs it now but I'm not sure if I need to remove the glass and re-paint it first, or if there is some easy stuff that can be put on (perhaps by a widow replacement firm?)

Anyone have any input?

Thanks,
Gareth

Gareth,
Due to the ever popular fuel tank vent hose syndrome I experienced the same scenario on my 89N.A.
According to the service manager and mechanic at our local Lotus shop, the only thing you can do is to replace the glass. I also checked with the glass installer and he said the same thing. You can get replacement windows at a good price from SJ Sports cars.
If anyone else knows of a way to repair the paint, please advise.

Oh...

Thats not great news I guess.
I remember seeing some good windows in a brocken V8 last year but maybe I am better just getting new ones.

Thanks.

off the top of my head around £75 each.

some people have masked the window with tape and then spray them with black paint, this has been done on my SE and to be honest it didn't look that great up close.

I think that is actually beta seal primer and not paint. I could be wrong but that is the way it was exprained to me.

Yes yes this is the way to go, take the windows out mask off the black lines where they are meaned to go and take it to a paint shop to apply something better that wont flake. My lotus mechanic done this for other people and mine is starting to flake as well. So seems the right improvement option to me.

Are you referring to what looks like old window tint coming off the windows? My 88 Turbo has that look.... the PO told me it was old tint, and it sort of has that look, however since the doors aren't tinted, that doesn't make sense to me either. Would tinting the windows be an option to hide this?

It’s the 2 inch black boarder around the edge of the windows (on the inside). I never thought about tinting but I would still like to see through the class so I wonder if its possible to just tint then very dark, just around the edge as it is now?

I'll look into this as my brother owns a body shop and doesn’t think that painting is really an option (try it as a last resort was his opinion). Replacements are about £105 each + vat from SJ Sportscars.

This is a serious problem with our cars. What you describe is the Beta seal primer and seal peeling away from the quarter window. When this seal goes it allows water to seep in and you fuel tanks will rust. The windows need to be removed and resealed to prevent this. It is not just a cosmetic fix.

Yea, so the upshot is that it's the primer that is pealing away and so it should not be a problem to fix.

But I need to do this ASAP as so far I have nice tanks that dont leak.

If they have been leaking, will the foam under the tanks dry out on its own or do I need to do something with this?

Cheers for everyones help,
Gareth

Calvin,
Thanks.... I'll take a closer look at mine. I need to get it in the shop ASAP for some other work... maybe I'll have them look at it then.

The pad dries out on it's own after a while. But the only thing is if the weather is wet and carwashs continually keeps this area wet and rust will soon follow from what I am told. I first noticed on my windows when using soapy water and the soap bubbles went between the glass and window frame. We must all do the windows as they fail or do the tank replacement in the future and that is a lot harder to do.

Hi

I took the car to the loal Autoglass centre. They said it shouldn't be a problem.

They will replace the current 'primer' with a newer spray on kind and it should look no different than origional. Cost is about £50 and they want to car for a day (hmmm not sure why they need a full day!).

Anyway, I will get it in next week.

My 89 SE has the same problem which I was looking at this morning and thinking 'I wonder how I can sort that'. Anyway nice to know mine is not the only dodgy glass lotus here.

I just had the dealer confirm my window tint is peeling and that will need to be taken care of. I will try and get to that later this year. Do the seals need to be replaced as well? I want to have the windows tinted, and am thinking it might be easier to have that done when the windows are out....... am I right in thinking this way, or could that compromise the seal if the tint were to be applied too close to the edge of the window? Also, does anyone know if the Esprit emblems come with the windows, or if you can reuse the existing ones. If not, are new ones available?

Has anyonoe actually had a go at taking the glass off themselves? What is used? very sharp little knife?

Can you cut the old sealant off clean-up the area and redo it ourselves with new sealant?

Kylie,
I have heard of people doing it themselves and basically they cut the old one out with some piano wire/guitar wire, paint the window or use some window tint and put it back with sealant. I am just afraid of busting the pillar cover thing, but I guess you have that one covered.

I'm thinking about just replacing the windows as I'm hearing mixed things about painting the black edges. Are the trim pieces at the rear of the doors hard to come by? I have recently discovered one of mine is cracked.

The trim is painted on anyway so you wont be doing yourself any favours by replacing the windows.
The workshop manual even gives you all the new dimensions for re-applying the trim. I can scan and e-mail them to anyone that would like them.

Garth: My rear quarter windows are trimed using a sorta of flate black paint on the outside. I'll admit its not correct but they don't look too bad. Might be a cheap fix fot the time being.
p.s... wiper motor still working great, thanks
