Funny, my father-in-law had an original Yaris and i could have sworn it was supposed to be a small car!
They were small in previous generations. Subcompact sized. I have a GR Yaris and it's not terribly small - the length is not that much longer than cars of yesteryear (3995mm or something) however it's much wider (about 300mm) and higher (300mm I would guess).
300mm, that's near as damn it a foot! yikes
That's a huge difference in the width of a car. To put that in context, a Mk1 Escort is less than 9" narrower than a a Mk1 Granada. Even a contemporary Rolls Royce is a lot less than a foot wider than the Escort was.

Ok so I’m stretching the rules a little as the 911 is only ten years old but this is for all those people who claim modern Porsches are now too bloated.

911 only a couple of inches lower than a volvo estate...

May have been more embarrassing had it been an R design.

Next time I’ll let the tyres down. Besides, I can’t afford an air-cooled model.

height Volve V60 1484 mm
height 997 Turbo Cabrio 1300 mm

184 mm or 7.25 in.

Not a couple of inches.

Traditionally Porsches haven‘t aimed to be the lowest sports cars.

I remember picking the kids up from nursery one day and coming out to find another dad was eyeing up my Jag, "Damn, that things the same height as my 911" which was parked next to it.

I remember being quite disappointed the first time I sat in a porsche - a Boxster, my first ever sports car. I’d grown up with pictures of the Countach on my wall and expected I’d be practically lying down the first time I drove something other than a family saloon.

wow i didn't think 7 inches was so small (I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere)

The broader point is this is classics dwarfed by moderns. A 997 despite being my favourite water cooled 911 is not a classic. Nor is it being dwarfed by the other cars in the picture.

This thread is rapidly become "my 911 parked next to other cars" which is fine if that's what everyone wants.

Fair enough. Apologies for posting against the grain. I shall read from a distance and be back if ever I win the lottery and I’m able to park a 356 next to something new.

Don’t be like that. It’s not my thread. Call me a name or ignore me I don’t mind.

Put pictures up and some might agree others might not. The fact I didn’t agree with that picture means absolutely fk all to anyone.

When I reflect upon my posts in this thread I come across as a complete ahole. To say I’m not proud of that is an understatement. It’s me that should take a step back from posting here, not you.

Apologies

Rob.

Ps I do like your car...

Guessing that it’s because a small city type car is the same width as a family saloon from 20 years ago

It's wider than the small city car that it's based on. Probably has almost as much interior width as the family saloon but a thicker better crash structure, so we shouldn't be that surprised that it's the same width.

Yes you said similar last week too. It can be said of all modern cars! I think you're missing the point of this thread rolleyes

I'm not so sure. No one on here is surprised that modern cars are bigger.

Just to add, this was taken on a Sunday evening, so no illegal parking was taking place smile
