You make a good point Rich.
A few years ago I had a Dacia Sandero Stepway as a hire car in Italy. Initially I wanted to hate it, but I grew to love the thing over the following fortnight and 2,000 or so kilometres. But even as basic as it was, I reckon they missed the mark. You see, it had air conditioning, electric windows, airbags left, right and centre, radio and CD player, remote central locking etc. All great, but things not everybody needs. No manufacturer (not even Dacia) makes a really basic car any more, a modern-day Renault 4, if you will - because we've all been conditioned to need all the bells and whistles.

No airbags, not even sure it has a heater. The front and back are the same panel, just with different lights. It has a suicide door on one side which I think is to avoid having to manufacture a different door for left and right.

Does anyone else find this thread depressing? I am absolutely certain that if the regulations were set properly the manufacturers could make small, lightweight, safe motor cars. As it is we have let ourselves get into this ridiculous situation.
I agree, it's ridiculous that when we are all meant to be being ecologically aware motor car manufacturers all seem to be churning out 2 ton goliaths, and people seem to be swallowing them up! Crazy... You might think you don’t want all the modern pleasantries that make a modern motorcar so big and heavy, but the undeniable truth is that old cars were mostly a bit rubbish.
Sunday morning gapping my spark plugs and greasing my nipples? No thanks.
5000 mile service intervals and thinking a 50000 mile car was almost on its last legs? Not for me,
Old cars are great and fun, but as a daily? Nope.

I presume that you own a small city car then?I am absolutely certain that if the regulations were set properly the manufacturers could make small, lightweight, safe motor cars.
