It seems a bit strange that the DVLA have decided to abandon their previous strict cut off date for the use of silver and black plates based on the cars original eligibility to use them when new, but hey, it's the DVLA - Go figure!
My understanding is that originally the two dates were not linked, but during the "fallow period" where VED exemption did not move forward, some wording somewhere linked the two. Once the VED exemption date started jumping forward again, the plates came with it, unintentionally. I have also read that the new reflective plates were being adopted on new cars almost without exception as they made things look newer and shinier, so it's extremely unlikely a car in 1976 would have had them, so it makes little sense that they can have them now. My Dad bought his new Morris 1300 in 1970, and that had reflective plates on it from new.

I really liked this lovely 280CE I saw this morning in Newcastle under Lyme. So stylish and from a time when a Mercedes could be bought in colours other than drab blacks and shades of grey.
Black and silver number plates look so out of place on a car, such as this one, that would have had reflective plates from the outset.droopsnoot said:

I don't think a 1976 car would have been able to have silver on black plates at all - I'm pretty sure the reflecting type became compulsory in 1973.Voxy said:

What is the gold coupe in the second pic? Has a sort of Fiat/Lancia look to it IMHO!
That's the first generation (Nissan) Silvia CSP311, and is does look Lancia-alike.Handmade, only a couple hundred cars made,...
