If you read this thread

there is a post from a user called 'hi ya'

HI guys!

Had to reply to this as I was involved with the making of MG and have to give the show some defence. I am a big classic car fan myself as were many of the guys on the show.

The hovercraft programme was a very very complicated build as i'm sure you know. The technical requirement limited us to a light 2 seater sportscar within a certain price range.

The dark blue Europa we featured was not actually in very good condition; so we did not destroy a concourse car (or even a A2 car!) The interior was a total mess & the fibreglass bodywork had had numerous accident repair bodges. The Triumph engine was a little rattly on the big ends; so really it did need a total restoration. It was one of these cars that had been bodged and bodged to keep it going throughout its life.

The final car when it had been "Hovercrafted" looked absolutely fantastic. The paint shop had really done us proud. It did fail the challenge; but the Marines refused to let the car be destroyed.

The story has a happy ending, as it has been donated to a hovercraft museum down south; so the Europa has actually been saved, rather than let it deteriorate & be scrapped or written off by a young lad buying a cheap lotus!!

Please don t come round to my house armed with a crowbar!! We did have a conscience with this one!!

In relation to the comment about the show being a "fix" with us having Ed China, Rex Garrard etc in the show; we wanted to feature people who were known in their field, not just amateur car builders who are in to modding Saxos!! MG made no secret of that!

Hope you enjoy the rest of the series!!

I believe it was made on the short lived UK version of the US TV program Monster Garage, but that's about all I could find.

Edit : I guess that's your picture and you already know that, so no new info, sorry.

Monster Garage - thanks for that. I always assumed it was Wheeler Dealers who did it.

It leaked like a sieve so not the best choice for a hovercraft. I was working at a Renault dealer at the time & was told I had to drive a Renault and a Europa was preferable to a Renault 4TL. I loved that car, yes it fell to bits often but I rallied it, sprinted it and even drove it to Spain and back. I was stopped for speeding in France but they let me go when I showed them the Renault engine.

Here shown with it's predecessor [ reg. was changed later]

Very crispy, but just awoken from a 40 year slumber.

Don't forget the hateful - Morris Minors/1000's - My dad had one - 2 years on the run the fking kingpin broke whilst we were on holidays causing us to shorten the hols - have hated 'em ever since - Truly 'Hateful' machines thumbup
Plenty of others disagree though when you see the numbers if moggy thou's in attendance at Classic car showssmile
Ha ha, we are obviously at the opposite ends of spectrum, had Renault 4, 2CV and have a Morris Minor currently, (along with other slow cars like Austin 7s which you would also probably despise.)

BTW Morris Minors don't have king pins, they have trunions.
The trunions let go if they are not greased regularly . . .
King pins seize if not greased regularly ...

Grease maybe - but that's no reason for a kingpin or tunnnion to fail, after the fking thing broke the wheel looked like it had fell off and the car was totally undrivable!!
Still a hateful car - though as I said in my original post there's plenty of moggy 1000's at classic car shows

For the full effect you should have sucked air through your teeth before suggesting new sills.

Haven't seen one of these for years, - maybe it ought to be in the 'ordinary cars that are off the radar' thread?

Not a spot as such but thought it worth posting here, an R080 up for grabs which has been off the road since '79...

I saw one of these, about a week ago ,in gold colour and in nicer condition than this one being driven locally to me.

It was the coupe/hatch shape.
