People said that of Nick Mason when he bought his Ferrari 250 GTO for £35,000 in 1977!
Yes he must be kicking himself for not buying one 10 years earlier for £3,500. Still, he's done alright out of it, and has made good use of it too.
In the end, he contacted Mason about his concerns, saying that he was getting concerned about possibly damaging the car during the race, and wasn't sure he could go through with it, only for Mason to tell him in a matter of fact manner:
"Don't worry about going wheel to wheel in the race if need be, and rubbing the panels, they've all been repaired/replaced in the past through racing. Just don't put it on its roof! The roof's original, and the shell itself has never been damaged."
Brundle went on to have a great weekend with the car (and no damage as I recall)
My favourite story about his car though, is from one bad winter, when there was deep snow and ice everywhere, and he needed to drive his kids to school. The everyday family car wouldn't start, so he tried all of his various other cars, all of which refused to fire up, with the exception of the GTO, so he drove them to school in that, despite the weather!
