So enlighten us. What have you had done and what was the ball park figure. £5k for that sort of job sounds reasonable..
No such thing as a ball park figure for a "panel off, glass out respray", each car/job is different.....same as £1-2K for an engine rebuild is too ball park?
panels off full paintwork quote (colour change) on my 1982 4 door:

includes for removal and strip of decker panel, bottom tailgate; removal of top tailgate, bumpers and roof ; preparing and painting the body-shell; re-building & re-fitting the doors, bonnet, decker panel, and lower tailgate, fitting the wings (x4 plus corners x2), re-fitting the roof & top tailgate; re-fitting the rear lights and applying new decals front & rear.

Paintshop is £4k for the major panels
Labour for all of the above listed including the bodyshell in satin black comes to about the same. £8k all in :-;

I'm in the middle of doing mine...

Excuse the Heath Robinson shelter, I moved into the city six years ago, forgoing the couple of garages and a barn. It does keep the rain off, and until the wind picked up today, the tree debris off too.

I just need to get the engine, gearbox and trans out next, so that I can finish off the centre section and front rails.

It takes an age prepping this ready for painting, just cleaning off all the foam tape, glue etc. from the roof rails took about 4 hours alone.

Cheers, Steve

I'm about the same point with my shell - slightly behind you. What paint are you using there? I bought some brush on Hammerite primer, but I'm not keen on the brush marks!

Good luck with it, but I hope you don't mind me saying your photos are awful!
You've posted better ones on this thread.

(Unless you are going for some 1972 retro soft focus look, then apologies).

It's corroless S for the primer and corroless RF16 for the top coats. I've used the buzzweld RCP (primer) and CIO (topcoat) too, which are essentially the same paints, however I found the CIO to be more Matt than Satin. So I put 10% of the S primer into the RF16 to take the gloss off and give it more of a satin look.

They can all be brushed, rolled on or sprayed on. I chose to spray, with a 1.8 tip. 10% thinners for the RF16, and ~12% thinners for the thicker S/RCP.

Fetched mine across from Cape Town, just in for paint but real solid underneath, changing the roof to solid one and doing away with the sunroof. Also painting the roof gloss black, think it will look well against the sandglow paint. Couple parts I'm hunting. Drivers side plastic sill cover and the small plugs that the letters fit in on the bonnet and tailgate.

Where did you start looking for a RRC in SA?

Did you do it remotely or do you spend time there / have a local contact?

Thanks - Love Sandglow!

3 door in Vogue on eBay...owner frequents this thread...looks like it needs plenty of work but let's not forget the very tatty one that was advertised by a dealer for £15k... it hasn't made reserve yet (and I have no idea how much that is) but surely worth more than the £1650 it's at currently!

Hi

I would appreciate any views on this car - http://m.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C878922

Does it look like value for money, anything obvious about the car, its spec etc. I am starting from a low base of knowledge so all and any observations are very welcome.

Thanks

busted

it looks quite decent to me. surprised if its an SA car that the interior isnt more sunbleached / cracked

Seats can be retrimmed in correct period fashion by Nationwide Trim in Redditch

engine could be good or junk !

nice that it looks unbastardised and has things like the jack and tools, correct wheels, bonnet mounted mirrors etc

Suffix B is actually rarer by numbers than A

i'd say the range of prices is £20k ish to £40k ish depending on condition

bear in mind they all look quite good externally as the body is aluminium - ie doesnt rust - key is the underneath

personal view is 4 speed early cars without power steering are not v good to drive so depends how much you want to use it..

Thanks that's really helpful. Sounds it is worth going to view. Just from an armchair view of price watching over the last few years I thought £27k not wildly out. I didn't know suffix B were relatively few in number. Very interesting.

Re the driving experience, I have always liked a car with a challenge. Just as a yardstick - is it going to be more of less agricultural than a 1960's British sports car? My Healey can be very heavy at slow speeds. The MGB before that probably slightly worse.

Just need to sweet talk Mrs Mattress that this is a good idea. I know she can cope/has coped okay with both of the above.

Thanks

That I like and it seems a sensible price. It would be interesting to see if it looks as good on a ramp as on the outside.

That was sold twice on eBay last year. It went for £6k and was run till the MOT ran out. It was then listed again and I think went for £4k. It did have the cocktail cabinet and picnic tables in the rear but they appear to have been looted.
