It's a bit more complicated than his list though - for example, my "KA" VIN Ardennes Green LSE has black lettering, not silver:

The mid-93 change over does add an extra layer of complication that's for sure.
I don't think that troubles Pedro though does it? Isn't his a 1990?

At risk of becoming PH's biggest P38 fan - Now in the second year of ownership I'm delighted with mine. I'd judge it to be the same sort of condition as yours Josh. Same colour and trim too but mine's a diesel. I bought because there was no prospect of finding a classic in comparable condition for my budget and I figured that from such a low threshold P38 prices will only go up...... eventually!

NomduJour is right of course but you need to put a figure on it and having made a bit of a hobby out of monitoring RR ads............
Ignoring the 'chancers' at the silly end of the market I'd say that the best cars, seriously advertised begin as high as £10K but I doubt they sell. A wide choice of nice cars seem to appear AND SELL at around half that. Something with an MOT, still looking tidy but with some of the common faults and you can half that figure again. Then there's a pretty steep drop to what's left in the market and it would be easy to get tempted by the sub 1K stuff - but not if you know anything about P38s!

There!! Having stuck my neck on the line, what say you?
Agree with your comments but I'm no nearer to valuing it! I was driving it this weekend and thought about just keeping it as I've done the hard work and its worth so little I might as well just enjoy it - thing is at 31 I've only owned 2 cars so far and I have very itchy feet!

I might put it up for 4 but open to offers as it is a buyers market and I have to be prepared for some movement down from that.

In response to what someone said about how they drive - they are great. You can bowl along at over 100 leptons in peace and quiet having a conversation. A friend who owned a classic assured me that would not be possible in his older model.

It doesn't; his should be silver.

Small update: I've done quite a lot of work to mine recently….. whistle
Come on then, spill the beans!
Well, it *might* get an appointment with an MOT man soon, but I'm not putting my balls on the line just yet! It's going well though, I've only used 4 rolls of MIG wire so far rofl

Nothing compliments an old Rangie more than an impractical sports car parked next to it. As far as I'm concerned it's the perfect combination and one I've enjoyed for over 20 years.

The old bus and a nippy sports car pretty much ticks every driving box.

With the blue 4 door soon to be replaced by the current work in progress:

Thanks. I moved out of London earlier this year. I sold the cottage and bought a house out in the Cotswolds. I put the doors and clad the end of the garage to create a workshop. The windows are just four voluble glazing panes per unit so the eventual plan is to remove them, tile the lower halves and fit Velux's in the top sections. Plus the windbraces are just pine strips so I need to replace those with proper oak ones but apparently stuff in the house is higher priority!

haha. "apparently"..

apparently I have an "unhealthy obsession". I did retort that drugs, prostitutes or both would be worse...

What's the threads thoughts on this, I know little of classic's hierarchy, where does it fit in, is it worth a punt, if so what sort of figure?

Rev counter dipping in and out is the alternator failing so allow for one of those (£120'ish. Easy to DIY).
Smart colour scheme though. Obviously have a really good poke about everwhere!

Judging by the rust on the slam panel in the under bonnet pic, I’d be checking all of the steel body frame and chassis.

If you’re competent with a welder it’s all fixable and replacement main sections are all available. If not, and you have to pay someone to do it, it can easily run to £3-8K to remedy, depending on extent of rust and who is doing the work.

Never heard that before and I've lived here 50+ years.
But then again I haven't bought anything from the area for over 20 years, always seem to end up driving 100's of miles, one of the joys of living on the edge of the world!
Thanks for the input on the car, it'll be interesting to see what it goes for.
Really don't think I know a fraction of what I need to before committing to one of these.

Obviously you need to pay attention to the running gear and electrics but there is no point in doing that until you've ascertained whether it is a rust bucket. This particular one has clearly had a quick polish and bathed in back to black.

You need to go and see it and check in the key places for rot. The bulkhead where the wings meet, the bottom of the A pillar, the rear arches around the door and then the two chassis rails. If those are all solid then that's the first big hurdle as there is likely to not be much rust in the other places and it's likely to be fixable relatively easily. If they've been replaced already then you have to look deeper and lift all the carpets to decide if the rest is still a crock. And if those key bits are rotten then I would always walk away.

If you find one that is solid then I'd compression test the engine and get a feel for the ZF box to gamble on those being OK.

Only then would I look at the electrics. There's nothing there that is complex or hard to fix but if it's all quite manky then it's probably going to be the cause of sitting by the side of the road a lot with annoying gremlins.

You can gauge an awful lot by just driving them a good distance. You'll pick up on steering play, worn transmission, tired engine, knackered springs or shocks quite easily.

I generally think most things are easy enough jobs so long as the metal is solid and the wiring loom in good nick.

I'd be a terrible person to take along. If the car turned out to be a goodun then I probably wouldn't be able to stop myself trying to buy it and you'd end up giving me a smack. biggrin

It's just the Adwest box and a new steering damper isn't it?
