Does anyone know how much similarity there is between an overfinch 580s engine and an e39 M5?
Both are 5 litre bored M62 (S62 double vanos for the M5) engines with about 400bhp and I'm led to believe the main OF part on the RR is the crank. I've just seen something that suggests its an M5 crank. This may make a difference to parts etc.
Wiki doesn't mention the OF but then its wiki so may not https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M62
Thanks

It’s a strange car as I’m not sure it added anything in performance terms than the factory SC car?
I guess it was the final hurrah of Overfinch as an engineering entity?
It was probably slower than the s/c but it came out a year or two before when the 4.4 was only 280bhp so another 100 was worthwhile. As a used buy now its completely outclassed by the s/c especially the 5 litre one, which may explain its scarcity.I guess it was the final hurrah of Overfinch as an engineering entity?
I'd agree as OF in its original guise its the last hurrah which is what makes it interesting.
I'd heard the crank was a bespoke item and likely to be made of chocolate but if its an M5 unit that is useful.
I'd quite like a 322 and the unique ness of the OF is attractive.
AK - The Bimmerforum thread is interesting, I'd not seen that. Thanks for posting.

I’ve heard mention both that it’s an M62 crank and that it’s actually a bespoke item (Ascari perhaps). Buy it, wait until it breaks and find out?
The Ascari KZ1 and A10 both used the S62 engine - but pushing out 520bhp and 625bhp respectively v. the 396bhp of the original unit - is it known what Ascari did to the engines?I would be surprised though on a cost basis if OverFinch were using Ascari parts - wouldn't the price have been a bit high?

Don’t forget to fit a reserve fuel tank to enable driving between petrol stations.
I have a chap with a tanker who goes ahead - rather like the RAF and mid-air refuelling my best ever was xjs and rrc - both with 20 gallon tanks - both filled completely twice on the same day... 80 gallons of fuel - an expensive day!
Anyone got any top tips for interchangeable parts for the Classics. I have a 93 hard dash & 1994 soft dash. Parts at breakers yards are really scarce now but I do come across Discovery's more often and there are plenty of parts that are interchangeable - particularly interior stuff with the soft dash.
Anyone got any other good recommendations where there are common parts? I'm thinking other cars must use the same seat ecu's for example as they're becoming pretty hard to find.

Have decided that I don't want to clutter up this thread too much, so have started a readers' cars thread here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
