Just picked the lse up from Mr Goodyer with the following tasks completed,

door pull rods fixed so I can actually leave the car when I get in it! Tightened the hand brake, replaced rocker cover gaskets due to a leak, replaced aux belt power steering, replaced brake pedal switch to stop the abs light coming on, replaced cruise control pipes and solenoid unit, replaced suspension ecu.

Now onto some welding, then paint work then the interior and then I will have a pretty tidy lse.

One observation I have made is the 4.2 seems significantly thirstier than my old 3.9, I didnt really think there would be much of a difference but it seems miles worse, part of the game obviously.

I don't think it will ever be efficient having a heavy car / big engine / no sophisticated engine management system... however mpg can vary - I expect it to run at about 15mpg (makes the M5 seem good!) with my last conversion from 4.2 to c. 5.0 it ran at c. 17mpg - but did 4mpg towing horses, and 20mpg with my mother in the car biggrin

My LSE seems to do high-teens at 90 or so on the motorway, can’t really complain.

My Overfinch LSE did 4.5mpg around town and 16mpg on the motorway and A roads almost regardless of whether you were traveling at. 60 or 90!!

The TVR 5.0 conversions on the standard classic seemed to be around 18mpg and still managing double figures when pottering.

This is why I’m experimenting with the rotrex supercharger on a 4.0. In theory below 2,500 rpm it won’t be running so I should get pretty similar mpg to a standard 4.0 and when cruising at 3-3500 rpm it might even be more efficient. Moving up and down the Rev range I expect to be rather shocking. biggrin

A taller top gear would make a big difference on a run - 3k+ rpm cruising seems inefficient nowadays.

Yup. The RV8 quite likes 3000rpm but there’s no escaping that 3000@80mph which seemed to be the standard final drive on all 80s/90s cars feels too high now.

This is why I’ve replaced the BW transfer case in my build with an LT230. It allows the 1.20 cog to be changed for a 1.00. Most off roaders stick a 1.4 in but I’m going to experiment at some point with how the car drives with 1:1 in the TC. I have a feeling it will make motorway cruising much more pleasant but hit B road driving maybe quite badly.

The car really needs an additional gear but I’ve ended up with the updated ZF4 because there just isn’t a later box that has a good aftermarket TCU that can be mapped for nice driving changes as we’ve discussed before. It’s going to happen but not in time for this build.

My plan (ha!) is LS with its original 6L80 still attached, with an ATB LT230.

That’s exactly what I’d do now. Back when I started there wasn’t an aftermarket TCU system that would allow you to remap the 6L to get a nice drive and to allow it to work without all the other ancillaries.

You can run an LS with an unmarried electronic GM box and no external controller - doesn't seem popular in the US, but it's doable with the right computer skillz.

Have you considered gearing up by going up a few sizes in tyres?

I did briefly but it still impacts performance at lower speeds but also buggers up the speedo. Also I’m running 15” wheels so not easy to do.

I've been a bit absent from this thread so I thought I'd better post an up-to-date picture of mine:

weepingweepingweepingweepingweepingweepingweepingweeping

I drove around in it today and very seriously wondered what I was doing selling it, but in reality, it's going to need more work over time and it was simply one project too many. I did even think about handing it over to someone and telling them to make it like some of the ones on here, and then keep it forever, but in the end I decided to move this on and spend a few bob on the Defender instead.

Whilst in the process of selling, I thought I'd probably sign off from this thread afterwards, but on reflection I might stick around, if only to beat myself up from time to time with what could have been smile Or, of course, I might buy another one! biggrin

Sad news Cappo, but probably sensible. Looks like you did OK out of it.
You must hang around the thread and then you can tell other owners when it's time to sell up!

biggrin 'have a lot of receipts for parts...' but which parts?!
an easy car to remove - an afternoon with a screwdriver / knife / hammer would make it look like a range rover!
