Driving older vehicles does require a better standard of driving, if you like to think that way.
There was a motto along the lines of "never drive into a situation that you can't see the way out of" which sums up what we might call defensive driving.
And of cause should remain just as true of driving any vehicle, just that with good brakes the distance you need to see can reduce a little. There is of course an amount off effect whereby you are at more risk if the vehicle in front can out-brake you than if the reverse is true, but at 40-50mph most of it reaction time anyway!
