Cars are wicked, mischievous, and endlessly conniving. They can tell when a trained mechanic is approaching. The fault that has plagued the owner for weeks will disappear when the mechanic is in range. As soon as the mechanic leaves, the fault will reappear.

Just acquired a Series 2 Daimler Sovereign, one of BL's finest, built right in the vinegar stroke of nationwide anarchy. looking forward to seeing just how bad (good) it is

Are you planning a reader's car thread? I love the early XJs and would like to follow your experiences with it.

Back in the early 2000s when I was heavily involved with TR7s we bought a Russet Brown Dolomite 1850 automatic as a shopping car. We both really liked it despite the heavy steering and it was surprisingly reliable. Eventually we sold it on for reasons other than the car itself but if we found another one in as good condition we would probably buy it.

The 1850 is a good car, and less of a hassle when it goes wrong than the slightly artsy fartsy Sprint (with its clever but complicated sixteen valve head).

My father bought one when they were new. Red, natch.
Nice little car as I recall, although it was very twitchy on unmade roads (which there are a lot of in Aus).

I don't remember any major breakdowns, although he did drive it home using the choke as a hand throttle when the accelerator cabke broke one night.

For people worried by the prospect of travelling too quickly they sold a 1300 and 1500 version. Very popular they were the sort of older generation drivers who wore hats.

I absolutely love it, low mileage, 2 owners, slow, brown, an expensive period added webasto sunroof that is open every journey.
Picked it up from a lovely old boy in wales earlier in the year, added to the fleet so I now have a Triumph from the 50's,60's and 70's to drive. May have to pick up a 80's spitfire or Acclaim to complete the setsmile

Should've gone to Specsavers.

Actually that's not fair, a nice soft-top TR7 with a V8 and chequered pattern interior would find a home with me, too.
