The photo of an Elite centre console reminds me that when engaging fifth gear my knuckles would sometimes hit the radio and eject the cassette tape.

The gear lever, being Ford sourced was prone to stripping its plastic threads and coming loose but even when new your knuckles would be very close to the panel.

I would think an Audi designer would smugly regard that setup as hilarious (if Audi engineers are capable of laughing) but then go on to produce hard riding cars that require the removal of the bumper, radiators, front panel and timing belt to change a thermostat.

In fact the easily blocked scuttle drains on many Audis that caused the ecu to drown are remarkably rubbish for a "German Engineered" car and may have been copied for the BMW produced Rover 75.

What Colin Chapman would have thought about a wheel and brake combo on many Audis that weighs over 30 kilos per corner I can only guess.

mwahahahahahahahahahahah, I have you in my web of evil!

NB - strictly speaking it is a British POS rabbit hole as not all of the stheaps involved are BL.

I replied on the other thread but I am actually quite envious of your owning that type. Prudence will see me go for an Excel, but my heart wants one of these.

Picking up tomorrow. Tell tale then.
Will also publish a thesis on how to tax a car you have just bought even though insured to me and with current MOT. Might work out yet...

Well, Arrived at location and confirmed bodywork mint. Very clean all over. Vendor arrived, I paid the balance, and we started her up only for her to conk out. No fuel. While vendor popped off to get juice, I managed to tax the old girl from my phone using the green new keeper suplement. Technology worked!

Two gallons of fuel and off she went then spluttered and died again. Bled through fuel till fresh stuff in the line and restarted. All good and set off.
A mile down the road she died again. Not going to go on the M6 (especially tonight!!) with this issue. Called vendor.

Now he could have said tough titty its your problem now... But. He came back with his van, towed me back to his unit, insisted on giving me the cash balance back unti he sorted it and will have it delivered when cured. Top Man! He is definately a bit of a Pistonhead.

Likely to be crud in the carb from the empty tank I would suspect. Ran well for a bit. Not rattley or smokey. Drove well...for a bit...

So, expecting delivery in the next couple of days.... Photos of arival to follow. Is it an electronic dizzy in the "O" series 1.7? Looks like it.

I'm fairly sure it would have had points originally, but could have been converted with one of the many electronic systems.

Check up and yes they have points. Stiil think it's a blocked carb.

O Series yaaaaaaaaay.

Late tonight THE MIGHTY SHERPA (two litre O Series, single SU carb, lecky ignition) launches for Pembroke, to take the 0245 ferry to Rosslare. I am taking my daughter to visit the historical sites of her ancestral homeland (the GPO on O'Connell Street where her distant relly Tom Clarke fought the Brits in 1916, Tara of the Kings, Glendalough, Newgrange, and all that), and also to visit rellies and have some craic. NB - craic. She is too young for crack.

We shall do a bit of camping and a bit of boutique hotel-ing. As the army say "any fool can be uncomfortable".

I have memories of the night ferry from Fishguard. Maybe it's improved.

Cabins sold out, but I have paid for the so-called upgrade to Club seats, so maybe we will get a better class of pisshead.

As a child we always did Holyhead-Dun Laoghaire, because Holyhead is closer to Brmingham where we then lived (well, Solihull, to be exact). Memories of caravan jams and broken down BL cars on the A5, and rude and unfriendly northern Welsh people (ooops, bit racist!) . Memories also of six hours hove to in a storm unable to enter Holyhead Harbour because of the swell, with the bars sold out of booze, the decks awash with seasickness, and failed attempts to sleep in the passageways and stairwells. I didn't get sick, but being 19 at the time was fed up that I couldn't get a beer.

Nowadays it is quicker for me to go from Pembroke or Fishguard (and in south Wales all the Welsh people are English anyway). The fast boats don't take campers, so the slow boat it is.

I have only ever done Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire, but then I have always lived in Cheshire, so North Wales is on our doorstep. It should be a good trip - Ireland is a beautiful country and your personal and family connections will make it memorable for your daughter.

Vanning in Ireland has been fun thus far, but more anon. After sunny weather on arrival, typical Atlantic fug and very soft drizzle interspersed with heavier rain settled in. Roughing it in style in the van, and cooking up some OK meals al fresco. worked fine, but we decided to give ourselves a night of sheets and showers, and followed signs to a hotel called the Cliff House in Ardmore, County Waterford. We did not know if we would find Fawlty Towers, a chintzy hotel for retired people, or somewhere uber posh. It turned out to be not just posh, but Relais & Chateau posh, but the hotel had one mega duplex suite left, and did us an on the spot deal. Only one Michelin Star - I did say that we were roughing it. The romantically inclined may wish to know that the hotel has a decided flavour of the weekend away with a person who is not your daughter - a bath tub made for sharing and twin showers in a glass walled wet room with direct views over the sea.

Back to the van. The Sherpa has spent the summer going to festivals and has made several long journeys up and down Britain and then across to Ireland without complaining. But now alas the dizzy cap and the points are shot. The van has been dropped off at an old school country garage, whilst my daughter and I take the train to Dublin (where we planned to be from tomorrow anyway). I hope to collect the van in time for the Saturday ferry, but we shall see. We missed out on Kerry, but in this weather we would not have seen much Kerry anyway. Anyway, a Dublin townhouse hotel and urban fun await. I shall call the garage in a bit to mention that there are some spare plugs in one of the van's lockers. I do not think that there is a spare dizzy on board, but they can have a rummage.

Yup and I'm still figuring out how he got a telephone box in the thing too. Pity he didn't show us the other three bedrooms either.
