I didn't even look at it from that angle, I was thinking that somebody might have done an overbore kit for the 3 litre GSI like Lotus did. The biggest Omega V6 was a 3.2 from memory so it's not that engine either. I thought the Cayenne V6 was the 3.2 litre R32 engine. It's certainly an interesting car, I see it's got the Lotus AP front brakes.

...or it could be cock ups at the DVLA? They haven't exactly been rare in the past (Os instead of 0s in the VIN and 2 seater listed as a 4 seater are just the examples that I have had personally, but it only takes a dealer to have put the work experience kid on filling out the DVLA paperwork when it was new for the details to be wrong).

I'd go with either of these.

"Just put down 3598cc ,it's near enough " some lazy bloke once said.

Interesting. What production engine has a capacity of 3598cc? Google throws up two or three: Porsche V6 (Cayenne) and Volkswagen VR6 (3.6 FSI), Jaguar V6, but surely only a madman would try to shoehorn any of these into an old Carlton?

Or a Mercedes W124 engine. I found this book extract (couldn't copy the text hence an image grab)

Taken from: "Mercedes-Benz W124 The Complete Story - James Taylor"

Would it fit??

The W124 was long dead by 2007. It was replaced in 1996, so the text suggesting an engine used between "2007 and 2008....was not the same as the.....engine used in the later W124...." is inaccurate.

Could it be a GSI with a retrofitted genuine Lotus Carlton twin turbo engine and bodykit?

I tried to blow up the image to see if you could see an auto transmission selector, which would give us some clues, but it wasn't clear.

It will 99% sure be a regular GM 3.0 straight six stroked out to 3.6. This was a common capacity easily attainable with off the shelf tuner parts. See specials like Bitter or Mantzel who used the 3.6 as their crate motor, also various home brewed tuners.

Or it could be a genuine Lotus development engine robbed from a rusted or crashed LC, but my money is on the former.

It's a manual and it's even got the Lotus wooden trim around the gear gator, if you can see the Lotus build number on the glove box lid it might give you a clue.

You could get a 5 speed carlton GSI, Lotus Carlton was six speed. Check the legend on the top? (unless the chap has been pedantic enough to swap that too!)

H511OOK full check comes up as a Carlton GSI 24V A 4 Speed Auto. Its recorded as a Total Loss on the 20/04/1995 and as a Cat C on 16/06/1999. It has had 3 colour changes the last being 17/01/2009. Has 12 former keepers - last change in 2009 - engine number recorded as 01000435.

Certainly has some history smile

that's all the right trim for a Lotus, if rather disgusting now. I can't find any information on what happened to build number 202 though.

What do you think it’s worth? Say as a non runner with a broken engine? Worst case scenario. I’ve posted a note through seeing if he’ll sell it.

Apparently the owner has only been seen a handful of times in the past couple of years

Very difficult without knowing more. I paid £150 for a steering wheel for mine (due to someone stealing the badge), I saw a gearbox for sale for £2k at the same time, Brakes if they're the AP's all round might be worth £1k upwards depending on condition, wheels probably the same.

Without knowing what's there it's very hard to say.

If it's a genuine lotus it's worth saving no matter what's wrong with it.
The price of a good one now is just stupid.

Such a shame as it's the one car on my list I'm sure I'll never get my hands on

The gear knob has the 6 speed gate with reverse right and back but as you say he may have just sourced that too.
