Plenty of places sell the 57mm wide pre 2001 font plates, and they are sold as "show plates". Reg's were far less strict until the advent of ANPR, but in general there were 4 fonts used across many decades and they varied depending on where the dealer/manufacturer got their plates...
And if you thought that we're the saddest nerds on the internet, check this out. 5,100 photo's of a Serck font numberplates!!

(Some cracking pics in there mind - all the period 80's stuff, love it!).

Serck, that's it! I couldn't remember the name of the 'wide' font I mentioned above. From memory the 4 looked awesome, very 80's computeresque.

As a kid I distinctly remember these appearing on lots of new Porsches in the late 80's.

There's a picture of my dad proudly posing next to his shiny new A-reg Sierra somewhere in that group smile It is an excellent source of 80s nostalgia!

When I bought my 944 the PO had renewed the plates to the thinner, modern font - so I had them redone in the pre-2001 wider font. They look so much better ...

I agree, i used to drive tourist coaches around London in the eighties, brings back great memories of some of the long gone London operators.

when I was still at school one of my Dads good friends was a branch manager at a Serck depot in the north East, I had a summer job making up the number plates ready for the August new registration rush. There was a template and a punch to put holes in the aluminium plates then fit the raised plastic letters and secure them on the other reverse with a metal clip. The pressed steel plates were baked in an oven.

I can't recall any perspex plates at the time c1975/6

Came across this on a cycle ride, abandoned car and house just down from Banstead, not following this thread so hopefully not duplicated.

High5 where about's is this? Please PM me if uncomfortable putting the road name online...not interested in getting the car but might have a look given it is local smile

If you go up Hazelwood lane, over the railway and take the left onto Hazel Way, pretty sure that’s where it was. The road doesn’t actually go anywhere I don’t think but there’s a footpath next to the property that led up to the road above that I was looking for at the time.

Holy cow, it's taken an excavator to get to that house. A flat roof mid century modern dream for someone, the XJS would have matched it perfectly

Streetview from 2014, the Jag must have been hidden behind all this scrub. Or under it...

Actually now I see the 2014 entrance is from the side. Still on the jungle side of private though.

Former resident obviously a car person with the trailer sitting there. Is that a Lotus Europa under the blue cover?

I would love to restore that house back to its flat roofed, aluminium windowed, Austin Powers interior splendour.

Can't identify the car under the tarp but there's a black E21 3 series going green next to the Juke
