I'm not a big fan of converting old petrol cars to electric power, but I can't help thinking that that RX8 could be a hoot to drive with an electric conversion!Yertis said:
I think that cars like that and the Ro80 are examples where electrification makes sense, from what I remember range will not greatly change either.
I also think an LS1 or similar would be more fun.
I disagree, like it or hate it the point of the rotary engine was light weight and small size for its power enabling it to be low, compact, practical and relatively light weight given how cheap it was[1]. The focus was always on handling rather than straight line speed. I also think an LS1 or similar would be more fun.
Sure replacing the engine with an appropriate electric motor wouldn't be that hard and in many ways easier than a more normal car (the rotary engine itself being far more "motor" shape than a normal piston engine) but the addition of sufficient batteries (and more importantly the weight with them) would just ruin it.
All that said the RX-8 is probably the most "electric" like in terms of power *delivery* (albeit without the lots of torque), very, very smooth without any real step in the curve.
[1] Mazda IMO spent very sensibly on things that made a big difference while sacrificing weight in others where it would cost a lot more and wouldn't save so much. If it had been for example a ~£60k car rather than a ~£25k it might have been 1-200Kg lighter but that wouldn't have fundamentally changed the car and fewer people would have bought it.

This is interesting to know, thanks for the details.
My father bought a new Opel Kadett (UVW951W) and Opel Senator (UVW950W) new in March '81, it was the Kadett I later learnt to drive on in the early 90's.
Both were bought from Concorde Motors in Stansted, what was at the time the main dealer in the area, not sure if it was an Opel or Vauxhall one, were they one in the same then?
The Kadett was classic 80's brown with a light interior!
There were dealers who sold both; most serviced both. Unfortunately googling Concorde brings up a lot of images, none very helpful though, but chances are they were one of those. I suspect the balance varied depending on the buying profile local to the dealership My father bought a new Opel Kadett (UVW951W) and Opel Senator (UVW950W) new in March '81, it was the Kadett I later learnt to drive on in the early 90's.

When delivered the Head Rests would be the first thing to be taken out followed by the adding of seat covers
How to turn your GL Spec Kadett into an L Spec
She didn’t get on with the last Kadett and replaced it a year later with a Ford Fiesta (not in Metallic Bronze but Green) that eventually went to my Mum and I learnt to drive in it.
Dolly Sprint sat since 2017, The guy bought it used it for a year and then just left it on his drive.
I found the ad from when he bought it in 2015
