Saw this in a Sarf London street last weekend. Carefully wrapped, either to conceal it's rare and valuable nature (!) or else to protect it until it can be restored (I doubt that wrapping will preserve it) can the eagle-eyed PistonHead gurus identify it?

It might be a clue, it might be a red herring but there were two back axles for a FWD car in the garage behind.

On second glance, I think you're right.

Again, it's currently taxed until April 2023, and MOT'd until February 2023 - It hasn't been left to die, and it's not really rotting, it's just an old smoker of a BMW.

S850 Dummy-SALAPA

^ What actually is this option? What is a SALAPA?
As far as I can find out it's not an option as per se. It's a placeholder in the options for some bit of information and because the translations don't always translate cleanly you sometimes get it just being displayed as "Dummy-SALAPA" without the detail.

Examples being:

S850A Dummy-SALAPA = zusätzliche Tankfüllung Export = additional filling of fuel tank for export = they fill a bit more fuel into the tank so that the cars can be moved onto ships etc
S925A Dummy-SALAPA = Versandschutzpaket = protection for export shipping
It's a pre-emptive acronym for what will happen to the car later in life: Sad And Lonely And Probably Abandoned.
Hahaha, love it. I'm gonna use that term more often on this thread...

Oh and thanks for the info on the codes.

Still has its original number plates on it, which is a nice but overlooked touch.

I am assuming this is definitely an SE and not a base, given the rear parking sensors and alloys on it. Next thing to ponder over is whether it had the "business pack" - CD changer, mobile phone, possibly a TV if it was for a guy who took himself and his car that seriously.
It's relatively high spec:

S401 Lift-Up-And-Slide-Back Sunroof, Electric
S428 Warning Triangle And First Aid Kit
S430 Interior/Outside Mirror With Auto Dip
S431 Interior Mirror With Automatic-Dip

S459 Seat Adjustment, Electric, With Memory
S473 Armrest Front
S488 Lumbar Support, Driver And Passenger
S495 3-Point Belt & Head Restr'nt,Rear Middle

S672 CD Changer For 6 CDs
S676 HiFi Speaker System
S694 Provisions For BMW 6 CD Changer

S500 Headl.Washer System/Intensive Cleaning
S508 Park Distance Control (PDC)
S522 Xenon Light
S534 Automatic Air Conditioning
S555 On-Board Computer V With Remote Control

S261 Side Airbags For Rear Passengers
S262 ITS - Head Airbag
S288 BMW Light Alloy Wheel, Cross Spoke 29

S850 Dummy-SALAPA

S863 Dealer List Europe
S877 Omission Of Non-Combined Operation
S880 On-Board Literature, English
Most of that would be standard on a 7 series of that era - those BMW spec sheets don't differentiate between standard & option, & include all the export info For instance, S555 OBD with remote sounds awesome - but it just means the trip computer with the controls on the stalk; the only big BMWs I've seen without that were mostly white with a flashing roof rack...

At a guess I would have thought at least the sunroof, Hifi speaker system, comfort seats, electric seats with memory, CD changer, xenons and possibly things like rear airbags would have been options.

Some of them are still options on most BMWs today!

I don't think so, not an an e38: they were very well specced as standard, all of those would have been fitted from factory. Options tended to be packages such as sport or cold weather, or which alloys you preferred, whether you wanted a maintenance deal, or added security, one or two phones, electric heated rear seats, rear blinds or dark glass. The late 90s were the times when BMW, Audi & Mercedes were in a turf war for the prestige market, so they were trying to out spec each other.

Comfort seats are never standard and things like hifi speaker if they ever come as standard it's recent. Xenon lights didn't become standard on a 5 series until 2014 and 7 about 2010 I think.

As for maintenance packages they weren't even a glint in a marketing persons eye in 1998......

I've checked the spec of a 1998 735i and annotated up the spec from your post accordingly - it looks like the only actual options that car has are/were;

Rear side airbags
PDC
Xenon headlights
Auto dip mirrors, and
Comfort seats (which all came with lumbar)

I wouldn't be calling that a high spec car really - no heated seats front or back, glass sunroof, double glazing, folding mirrors, electric steering column, sun blinds, EDC dampers, interior light package phone, Sat-Nav, Professional HiFi, Self levelling suspension, ski-bag etc, etc , before you even get to all the Individual stuff.

I think you'll find they were in the high end models: the brochures I've seen include them either as standard or n/c, & my X5 had them as standard. My e39 had Xenons & the hifi, standard, albeit that's an Alpina, so slightly off track. Maintenance packages were certainly an option back then, there are brochures available showing that - they were aimed at business clients primarily after all, the type of customer interested in the total package.

I don't think any regular E39 had hifi and very few xenon's. It's needed them as the standard lights are rubbish and the audio the worst ever fitted to a large saloon. At least until the E60 came along which has the worst standard fit sound system in any car for 30 years. 😃

It seems to be a standard BMW thing. Even a F10 as standard has one very cheap low frequency speaker in each front door (no tweeters) with no frequency response over 16k. And the standard pre-2014 headlights are rubbish.

Well, no - because they're e39s. We're looking at an e38, though, different market, different standard specification. Having driven both in the dark, over many miles, the standard headlamps weren't "rubbish", just not as good as the xenon, & to say the sound system was the worst of any car for 30 years is laughable.

Sorry the E60 standard system really is appalling, worse than a E39 in fact. It's actually the speakers more than the basic amp. It's worse than basic fit systems in many budget cars such as low level Fiestas, Hyundais etc.

The HiFi upgrade which doesn't add much on paper is hugely better and a half decent system as they go.

A couple local to me which have been here for years, although I'd forgotten about them until this morning - the yellow one is actually taxed until April next year but the red one is SORNed and the MOT expired in October 2019...
