Fond memories of my old Manta GT/E, and the ads:

I love that 60 section tyres are described as Ultra Low profile, how times change

...and cam-in-head - Erm, overhead cam? smile

Poor advertising to play on the excessive cost, but it was back in the day.

Absolutely. Sadly technology wasn't advanced enough for some of his ideas to work.

Tyres were narrower so 60% of 185 is 111mm whereas 40% of a modern 205mm is 82mm, a difference of 29mm. For a 50 profile, it would be 102.5.

Yes I get that but those were 195's which weren't exactly skinny back in the day and now you get idiots driving around on 35's on 215's

I, too, was unsettled by that headline

could it be, however, that this price was, at the time, a more affordable entre into sporty motoring than competitive brands?

and, therefore, a way to say:

"Hey, if you thought that sporty motoring was out of reach, it's actually not."

or

"If you thought that we were too expensive to consider, we're actually rather affordable."

(just thinking aloud here)

I thought the Opel engine was always described as cam-in-head because the cam housing isn't separate to the head like it is on something like my Vauxhall slant-four OHC engine. But I've no direct knowledge of the Opel engine, I must say.

22 grand in today’s money. I suppose for a sporty coupe it’s not a bad price.

Not an advert but some interesting images from the late 60s.

I looked for car-related ads in my old copies of Picture Post yesterday (1939-1941). Nothing at all, partly because of the war I suppose, but also because most people didn't have cars until the 50s. It's all tonic wine and cigarettes.

A bit of 'posh'...

Pretty sure I've posted this one already but I noticed the same car was used in an episode of 'The Avengers'...
