Thanks for all that useful info. The OD gearbox is still in my shed where it has been since July. It might get fitted over the winter. The water tank idea is a good one.

The Sherpa went to Ireland on hols. had a fifty Euro points and condenser fix in a rural location, and came back home. It has barely moved for the last month or so.

My van has disc brakes at the front and stops quite well. Today I will look inside it for the first time since before Xmas. i hope it isn't all damp and mouldy. I will take it for a drive if it starts.

The MGB overdrive gearbox remains firmly shed bound.

Checked van out after its long winter snooze - started up OK. Not very damp inside. Rear lights have stopped working - probably dodgy wires eaten by mice or whatevs. Hippy punk gothabilly brother v happy that van loves on and, as he sold his van and wants to borrow mine for going to see dreadful bands and pulling purple haired women and what not.

Yesterday I briefly brought the eastbound M40 to a halt when the Sherpa conked out suddenly and in a cloud of steam next to some roadworks (coned off shoulder) just past Wycombe, and ended up dangerously stranded on chevrons between an entry slip road and the main carriageway. Two very efficient Traffic Officers arrived quickly, stopped the traffic, towed the van to the shoulder, and re started the traffic. A low loader arrived soon after and carted the van to Beaconsfield Services, and then an ace AA bloke who owns two SD1s turned up and solved the problem. A heater hose had burst, showering the engine with coolant and zapping the coil - hence the sudden loss of power. The dude bypassed the heater, dried the coil, and refilled and bled the cooling system. Head gasket OK, and I made it home only a few hours late.

Apols to anyone who was stuck in the brief traffic stop!

Last week, the van had to make a last minute early morning dash from north London to Luton Airport when the cab booked for an early ski departure failed to show up . At least skis fit in the back no probs. The van started first time after a week getting rained on in the airport car park. Pity that Luton Airport couldn't be arsed to have a working payment machine at the exit "Oh, it's been broken all week, most people pre-book" said the cheerful bloke who eventually turned up to left me out after a 45 minute wait very late on a cold and rainy night.

Today the van was being a van again. I cleared out my room in chambers, as I start a new gig on Monday. No furniture to move, as I've given my desk and chairs to junior colleagues, and donated most of my books to the chambers library, but assorted stuff.

Infallible rust repair - by painting over it. The van looks well spiffy thanks to random sprayage with a can of Rover Champagne paint. That's beige to those of you who aren't posh. I need another can to do the wheels, unless I use the spare can of yellow Hammerite left over from my Dolomite, or a can of Lancia bronze that's too dark for my Beta.

Thread closure: I sold the van last year for something over four bags. It is being renovated down in Devon.
