Almost inconceivable you wouldnt make money buying classics from 2009 onwards in a bull market unless you were getting horrendous guidance

I don't think this is about losing money overall, there were too many deals done over a long period for that not to have been the case. The claim is more related to the loss of profits on some deals that were alleged to have been done with 3rd party buyers that apparently didn't exist, i.e. JD being both the buyer and seller so they were making profit from the sale and making commission on the deal (against apparently inflated values of the cars), even though they were deemed to have been acting as the agent for the seller.

Many in jag circles that are not particularly hands on with their cars think that JDC are the dogs danglies .
Others won't touch them with a sterile barge pole wearing gloves .
I have worked on a couple of cars that had been through their hands and sold at premium prices , I soon became unimpressed.
I shall watch with interest but fear that the winner will be the one with the best legal team .

It will be an interesting case for sure

If JD deliberately and intentionally defrauded the client, then they appear to have done a pretty poor job of covering thier tracks. Arrogance, ignorance or innocence?

Yep, it does seem extraordinary. The accusation is that the gullwing was on their stand, for sale, at a major motor show after they claimed to have sold it.

There are plenty that are much much better than JD, just do your research, its not difficult to do, try to find someone who's passionate about what he does, there are some real nice guys out there that wont rip you off.

If you were seriously considering JD then you already have enough funds for two restorations.

Their stand at XK60 was full of very shiny dead things. The moment the clouds came over everything was covered in plastic to make sure it staid very shiny.
I'm sure there are many potential buyers who want their classics to be shiny, personally I like them to look like they have some personality and appear a little lived in. I guess you pay's your money and you takes your choice.

I'm surprised JD haven't already gone down the trendy 'fake patina' route yet then.......

Surely theres nothing worse than an old car with a better than new finish?

Im not criticising JD, they have obviously been doing something right. You do find that in many cases the restorations of these cars are rarely open checkbook jobs and the owners decisions dictate the level they go to.

I do however struggle to see the attraction in sticking some matt lacquer in the final coat to kill off the shine.

I agree.

I hate over-restoration, always have done.

It is my understanding that the normal toffee apple sheen on modern paints wasn't achievable with the period paints when XKs were being made. So I'd chose to have a paint finish which had an appearance closer to the way they'd have left the factory.
It tends to be the interiors I'm not so keen on though, which is a problem for owners generally. When you get to the stage where the interior needs replacing, new leather in an old car always looks wrong to me.

About 5/6 years ago i enquired about an original but really rough Cotswold blue 3.4 MK1 manual JD had, It looked like it was tugged out of a damp garage, They wanted 9K for it. No chance of getting any money back on that after the full restoration it required.

You can follow the series of photos. The car was getting doggy having done over 100,000 since I bought her 30 years ago, so I decided on a rebuild in factory colours.

For someone who knows his job and would cost about one third of a JD Classic rebuild speak to Lee Ridley of Castle Classics

XK60 is dead. Now have a look at XK70 and see what is on offer, including a Glen Miller band evening! I shall be there in the XKSS.
