40+ year old cars exempt from MOT?
Discussion
I've just done my Stag and it couldn't have been easier! It's passed all its MOTs in my care in the last 8 years with only 2 advisories back in 2012 being the only blots in the book so the annual mot is a bit of a formality only for me. As a working middle aged man with no dependants the free car tax and now MOT are the only concessions I get so I'm having them !

Just got back from the post office.
All in all it was fairly painless and easy.
The person who went in before me was the person who got all the fun as the post office staff had to ring DVLA to confirm the procedure as they hadn't been told (according to the post office manager).
I really don't understand why anybody would go to the post office to do this? It takes about 4 clicks on your mouse and it is done. All in all it was fairly painless and easy.

My E type is still taxed, but I want to do a V112 declaration (i.e. without taxing it), anyone found an online way of doing it....our nearest post office is miles away !
The V112 (or online tickbox equivalent) just says "Don't reject my tax purchase because of no MOT, and this is why." - so without buying tax, it does nothing. If you're trying to officially say "No MOT needed", then you need to SORN it and retax it. But I really don't think it'll change anything. You'll still have a taxed car without an MOT, just like now.

Simple peeps. Just go on line and cancel your tax. Then tomorrow re-tax it and you'll be asked to tick the box which says your car is over 40 yrs old. Look at Cappo's post above for the exact wording. Since your road tax is £0 you are losing nothing and getting over the MOT problem.thicksliced said:
My car, first registered in 1969, unmodified and currently taxed and Mot'd. When the Mot expires I have a month before the tax expires. As far as I am concerned the car is Mot exempt so I do nothing until I re tax it. Correct?
My 1970 is currently in this "zone" the MOT has run out and 40 days of the tax left when I check it on the dvla site the MOT status has gone from the red coloured "expired on date xxx" to this below:Different to my 1959 which shows this:
I will run it on the weekend anyway...

Bear in mind if you declare SORN you are automatically barred from online retraxing for 5 days. I know not why. kevin st said:
Just taxed our minor which has not been on the road for 15 years and is sorned using the V5c, it went straight through, didn't even get a question about wheather it was substantially modified or not.
No offence Kevin but this is a great example of what’s daft about it all. You are now fully Road Legal and can now hammer down the M1 to blow 15 years of dust off

Perhaps the DVLA should have considered some sort of initial MOT for cars returning to the road after a long absence.
