The mot is due on our 88 350i....I just noticed I have an outstanding advisory for worn pitted rear brake discs , normally I would do the job myself …{with some advice from the forum}... but I am not at home much due to work commitments at this time of year. Is this a job that could be left to a trusted independent garage... and what should I expect to pay to have the job done.
cheers

Jag inboard rear discs .. part is probably quite cheap.

Cant remember if the wheel end of the drive shaft has to be removed or just the 4 bolts on the disc.

Anyone ?

Just done this job, renewing both sets of calipers as well. What a pig of a job.rolleyes The discs do come out by undoing the drive shaft bolts. The calipers need to be removed. The only plus side is that the parts are Jaguar XJ/XJS so are readily available and reasonably priced and available for exchange. J C.

Measure the discs. If they are not near the minimum thickness (11.4mm) then check the pads.
If the pads have over 3mm material left then simply leave it alone. Otherwise replace the pads.

The rear brakes on a wedge don't do a huge amount, it's the front brakes that really stop the car.
I have had scored rear discs on advisories that they simply don't mention the next MOT with no ill effects, and no effect on performance.

Yeah if all you are worried about is the MoT then there shouldn't be a problem, the discs have to be in quite a bad way before it will fail, or an imbalance in braking effort.

Also a bit of a non issue MOT wise, as if the car is fitted with a LSD, it is NOT to be brake tested in the rollers!

Decellerometer test for the service brake and parking brake, and that hides a multitude of sins in the braking systems wobble

Parking brake test can be a little tricky though paperbag

Using an umbrella handbrake on a seac on a step hill is a nightmare.
