The coupe had the huge power bulge to clear the carbs and airbox whereas the non Vantage spec Volante had the injection engine and no bulge - exactly as you said.
The coupe came first and had the 432bhp engine, enough to make the target 300 km/h top speed. Customer demand was strong, so after the initial 52 cars AM made the Volante, but to avoid pissing off all the Coupe customers who's exclusive purchase would suddenly look less exclusive, AM installed the detuned, fuel injected V8 with around 100 fewer horses, and no bulge.
AM did build a Vantage Volante prototype but it was never officially sold.
AM did convert 10 Volante's after production to the Vantage spec, with injection conversion to carbs (so bulge needed) and open headlights. Of these, 2 were bored out to 6.3 lt and this is one of them
Interestingly, the first rhd coupe was bought by Rowan Atkinson who had it race prepped

Personally I thought they were ugly at the time and still are now.The coupe came first and had the 432bhp engine, enough to make the target 300 km/h top speed. Dropping granddaughter #2 at dance classes in Thatcham this evening I spotted a door open nearby and felt I should go and have a little look. Glad I did.
Harrington Sunbeams must be very rare now - they weren't exactly common back in the day! Great photo of the Topolino - my Dad had one back in the 1940s when he met my Mum.
I've no idea why I remember it's registration was AYF 282 as he sold it years before I was born.
I really need to scan some of the old family photos for the Classics in Period thread!
I love those little Autobianchis and their relatives, particularly since that Peter Sellers film in which one starred in an Italian piazza with a Ferrari. It was driven by Sellers in a a bear suit. "Tucker, Tucker!" Can't think of the name of the film immediately.
Spotted this morning in Selsdon, Sarf Lunnon, a Citroen DS or ID in pale-ish green. Boy, what a culture shock that shape is these days!
