Proper 'wing' mirrors really were pants.

My car has wing mirrors (because there were holes in the wings that would have needed welding up if I didn't fill them with something and door mirrors on a 1951 car just look wrong) and are surprisingly good - I can easily reverse through the kink from the drive into the garage without twisting my neck round to look over my shoulder. They are convex which gives a good wide field of view.

When I first drove it I was expecting to have to fit extra mirrors on the quarter lights but really don't need them.

The only pain is they are easily nudged out of position and setting them up is a pain as you have to get in and out a few times unless you have an assistant.

Nice car. Is that a broken aerial on the LH wing?

I had a 72 Cortina with them on. Once adjusted they eliminate the rear3/4 blind spot that you get with door mounted mirrors, they are in your field of vision so keeping track of what is behind you is easy and no need to turn your head or refocus, the major adjustment you require is mental as due to their convex nature objects appear more distant and fast approaching vehicles will pass you much quicker than you might think.

Why did they move back to the door? Presumably because it looks a bit neater and they're easier to adjust/can be made adjustable from within the car. But with electric adjustment they could just as easily be down the wing again, in cool fairings.

I think a lot of car design is just "this is what a car looks like". So that is where the mirrors go. The new Honda EV thing has no door mirrors but the cameras are where they would be, it's what people expect. I suppose?

I imagine that anything positioned on the wings would fall foul of pedestrian protection rules these days.

Spotted in my local vet's car park this morning - an R reg' Metro Rover 100 'Ascot SE' in a lovely shade of dark green complete with leopard skin seat covers and black duct tape holding part of the front screen rubber in place.

I think the reality is that, despite the odd fan here, they left an extraordinarily enormous blind spot. Yes, you could make it better now with electric adjustment, but the reality was that it was a pretty daft place for a mirror. We really don't need to go back.
