Not the last Granada before the Scorpio mess - I had a 1985 Scorpio many years ago that looked just like that. Scorpio wasn't much more than a trim level, but the early ones like mine had no Granada badges anywhere.

The frog-eyed Scorpio minger came along later - early 90s I think.

Wrong. They’re ‘very attractive’.

Joke apart, they are ugly as sin but for some reason I like them.

Think I spotted this fella in Christ's Hospital yesterday evening, same colour, I thought the plate was VJM **** but the K could easily have become a J, in my head, by this morning.

Right. So you agree, that was the last Granada shape before the Scorpio mess. That shape was a Granada, not a Ford Scorpio.

In full pedant mode, close, not quite: the shape in Ford nomenclature was Scorpio, this one being the mark 1 hatchback; the name for the UK & Eire was Granada, elsewhere either Ford Scorpio or Merkur Scorpio, depending on the market; the highest UK/Eire trim level was Granada Scorpio, one above Ghia. smile

There's a dark purple one for sale round the corner from me - will try and grab a photo next time I pass - doubt it will sell due to the impending ULEZ...

So between us we are getting near - but there was a Ghia X trim level in between the Ghia and Scorpio!

The Scorpio was the top spec UK Granada, however the "Scorpio" was the model name in the rest of Europe with the trim levels following accordingly.

I think this was because the Granada name was held in high regard by UK buyers and it was sensible to retain the name, whereas in the rest of Europe, the Granada had a poor reputation and it was an opportunity for a fresh start. When the blob eyed second gen in '94 appeared, the Granada name was dropped and the UK came in line with the rest of Eur with the Scorpio model name.

Here's my spot from yesterday.

That’s a bloody rare spec, big motor in a low spec car, I like.

I don’t recall such a beast in the uk, I’d have thought you’d need to be at least at the dizzy heights of a Ghia to get that motor.

Good point! Was there an 'S' pack option for the Granada as the Mk5 Cortina had? I had a GLS Cortina, complete with fishnet Recaros. Clearly a case of the rep having a budget, buy couldn't have the next model up due to rank in the company.

The Granny I can't remember, but a 2.9 option might have been part of an 'S' pack for a GL Granny?

My Scottish grandfather had one of these in green. As a nipper, I thought it was the most fantastic thing ever made by man.

I'd quite like one now actually, but I'm a long way from a support network here.
