Ratty looking rare-as Renault 4 van with a window conversion it looks like … LHD so not an original UK car … imported in 2016 by the looks of it. Clever hatchback arrangement.
You could actually get a R4 F6 van with side windows and the funny rear door arrangement.

A farmer near us had one of these for years and regularly used it to cross the fields, tow a trailer, take hay to his sheep in winter and even transport them when necessary. Said he preferred it to his LR 90. It was only the rust bug that killed it (eventually) after about 30 years as mechanically it was still going well

I knew a farmer who used a 3rd gen Toyota Supra Turbo for that sort of thing, it looked like the Top Gear Hilux.

Isn't it mounted on a flap that conceals the fuel cap?
You are quite right. Used to love it as a 5 year old. Top cool points. Even though that probably wasn’t yet quite a thing.
They're vicious buggers as they’ve a really strong spring (and prone to coming a bit loose too, hence the wonkiness on the one in the pic smile )
And hinged at the bottom so not very convenient to use.

My missus ran one of those for a year in 1996, same colours too. Failed it's MOT on rot, too far gone to repair, sold it for what we paid for it to a number plate dealer as it had a good number on it.

Presumably all the rot would have been repaired as it needed an mot to remove the number?

More likely an "accommodating" MoT tester.

Would it have needed an MOT in 1996 though? I can't remember when the rules changed, but the DVLA did tighten things up to prevent exactly this - the removal and subsequent sale/transfer of "valuable" Registration Numbers from what were basically scrap cars. I also thought you could transfer a plate within 6 months of the MOT and/or tax expiring?

I remember my sister had an MG Midget with a nice plate on it. She sold the car with the plate when her first baby was due. Then she regretted selling it, and tracked down the car to buy it back. Only the plate had been split from the car by that point and she realised that a) the plate was worth as much as the car, and b) there was no way she could afford to buy both of them back, so she bought a different (and much better condition) Midget that still had it's original issued registration number. Her reasoning was that "her car" wouldn't be the same without it's "name" which was the three letters on the plate, so she might just as well buy a different car.

Dunno. I checked the going rate for the number in case I was being taken advantage of, they took it away on a trailer, not my problem.

They must've changed their plans for it as I've just checked it and BEN241C is still on the car, it survives! smile

Pretty pointless too, I'd have thought, being barely higher than the main brake lights. Far better to mount it inside the surrey top and do without it when going totally topless.

It's better than the door alignment!

I don't, it looks bloody awful...add to that it's beyond the point of being legal with wheels/tyres extending beyond the wheel arches. And not to forget Series hubs are not designed, nor in fact suitable, for constant additional hub loads that excessive wheel and tyre sizes bring + they drive like sh*t with oversized tyres.

The only real point of interest in that photo' is the Landy's parked in the President Parking judge
