Ok it was at Donington today, but just in the public car park.

Never seen one in real life before. Fascinating
Wow! I don’t normally spend much time on the Classics pages but I started reading this thread from page 1… that actual SZ is mine now! Bought it at the beginning of Nov. Previous owners initials were PW hence the plate.

Not as a base model 5 door, no.

As a 3 door in Aero spec with 3 spoke alloys, however:

Are those 9000 wheels? They look too big on that car.

Essentially the same shape, but what a difference fewer doors and deletion of the quarter light makes! (alloys, wing and lowering also help smile)

Yes. And no. They were optional in the day, and the exact same appearance as the ones on some 9000 models but there's all sorts of complications over PCD differences and whether the handbrake works on the front wheels (pre-1987 facelift) or the rear. They are highly prized in Saab circles.

I have a set on my Monte Carlo:

Standard wheels look like this, as seen on my convertible S...i have to say I like the look of the bigger ones!

Sensible London transport…

Still there this evening

In 2004 when I showed my Mustang on the club stand at the NEC, there was one of these in this colour (with dark green vinyl roof) for sale on the Alan Carrington stand - I’ll have to try and find the pics buried deep on my computer somewhere to see if it was this car. £16,995 from memory …

Edit: sold at auction for £51,750 last March …

One of these used to live in Bristol, permanently parked on the street between Gloucester Road and the cricket ground. I'm pretty sure the same chap owned one of those rare Lancia Themas with the big engine, which sounded lovely.

Yeah, it gets so tedious having to kick actors out each time I want to use it smile

Interestingly, the one used in Hot Fuzz was not an actual Monte Carlo edition, just a regular 900 Convertible in Monte Carlo Yellow, and without the Aero kit. The wheels on this are the ones standard for the Monte Carlo edition. The car in the film also wore a fake number plate, belonging to a Golf.

I have a set on my 9000! (I have another set in the garage in fact as well...)

(The car has been re-gingered since this picture.)

Wheels are confusing. I associate these with 9000s and often forget they were on 900s too. I do know there are versions with exposed bolts and others with hidden bolts, and not sure which are more sought after (I prefer hidden bolts.)

Yup, correct. Particularly with polished rims, although I don’t like that look myself.

The standard ones for the Monte Carlo are asymmetric, with the swirls theoretically directing air flow to the discs, but when I got mine it had a set of 4 all going in the same direction. I sold them on eBay when I picked up the Super Aeros. A guy bought them as a cheap upgrade for his 900i (non-turbo) convertible that was spiced as standard with wheel trims. He didn’t care about the directional aspect.

Surely the only car ever to look good with 3-spoke alloys, was a Saab.
