COOL CLASSIC CAR SPOTTERS POST! (Vol 3)
Discussion
Hurworth Classic Car Show (near Darlington)
Lovely day, sun, shiny metal (and some polished plastic) fiver "donation" for cars attending and £3 person for punters. One absolute superstar car here...
...and one not-so-shiny car that was probably my favourite
didn't get chance to talk to the guy who'd brought the Rolls Royce he always seemed to be chatting to someone else when I walked past but the car was at the same show pre-COVID and pretty much looked the same. I had a chat with him then and he basically did the "barn find" thing, washed it, oil change, plugs, etc. and started it! Lovely to see it looking like that, I hope he keeps it like that.

I've only seen one three speed auto they are as rare as rocking horse stYou can do a manual to auto conversion which obviously makes them easier for those of advancing years to drive but takes the whole fun out of it and would probably hit the resale value.

Borg Warner 3 speed auto for the MGB was only offered in the UK. And was not popular. You can do a manual to auto conversion which obviously makes them easier for those of advancing years to drive but takes the whole fun out of it and would probably hit the resale value.
When the young and car obsessed me was a petrol pump attendant in the early 70s, I was intrigued to serve an elderly man in a Mini Automatic. That's right, the classic Mini but automatic. At home I looked up the performance: 0 to 60 in 24 seconds. No, hold on, in those days the magazines reported 0 to 50. Maybe it was 0 to 50 in 24 seconds! The MGB automatic may have been a bit better.

Mini automatics could be really tricky to manoeuvre when cold on choke, the non servo brakes needed huge effort to push down on the pedal and hold it back against the higher revs and creep. I always wondered how the folks who tended to drive them managed.
I had an elderly aunt who had a succession of Mini automatics so she obviously did alright with them. They were four speed so unusually for the time they had the same number of gears as the manual.

In my student summer car cleaning job in the 80's I came across several Mini Automatics with exactly that problem - to manoeuvre from cold with the choke out, I used to stand on the brakes and move the car by going between drive and neutral, and reverse and neutral, and basically jerking forward and backwards like a learner! Anyway, here are a few from my run this morning.
Good old Palace Auto's with a few more rough diamonds....
