I did 8 hours across France in August with no aircon and two small kids a few years go and they loved hammering along back roads with everything open! Noisy but windy! We didn't even have fully opening back windows, just the front-hinged ones.

Yup, the Granada looks like an E28 to me too.

Also the "Renault 9" looks like a Cyprus Green E30 3 Series.

The 190 is likely to be a cooking 190/190E with a boot spoiler. It doesn't look low enough for a 2.3/2.5-16, and also the interior trim looks too light - they would only have come with black leather or black / white check cloth which would have looked black from a distance. However the conclusive point to me is that the "2.3-16" badge is on the right of the boot lid and there doesn't seem to be one.

Good petrol engine in these Hemi head IIRC my mates father had a 75 year 504 Diesel very rare back in the late 70's/80's ended up doing obscene mileage before the body fell around the running gear sadly , they purchased another years later on an 80/81 plate 1800 auto that ran trouble free for many many years ultimately rotting away too along with the cloth seats rotting and falling to pieces , comfortable and quiet I remember unlike the Diesel laugh

Ha! A 504. My Dad had on of those. It was 2 litre fuel injected model.

An 8 year old Derventio lost his eyebrows because of the damn thing!

Dad bought as a non runner as the previous owner couldn't get it to run properly on 4 cylinders for some reason. Dad had it on the drive working on it. He had been running it but it would only run on 3 cylinders. The plan was to remove the dizzy cap,remove each of the injector feeds, one at time, turn it over a half rev and see if fuel came out of each line.

He asked me to stand at the front of the car, head over the engine bay and tell him if I could see fuel coming out of the pipe, into a milk bottle. The first two fuel flow checks went fine with Dad spinning it over for a second and me letting him know that fuel was indeed squirting out of the pipe.
We got to the third check and the pipe slipped out of the milk bottle, spraying petrol all over the engine bay!

I vaguely remember the WUMPF and then suddenly standing on the other side of the street, eyebrows and hair smouldering shouting EFFIN' HELL, EFFIN' HELL at the top of my voice, whilst Dad rushed back and fourth with bowls of water, hurdling my Raleigh Chopper in the process.

I don't actually remember running the 50 or so metres up the driveway or crossing the street!

The car was fine. Some slightly melted wiring and a bit of blackened paint but it was eventually fixed and turned out to be a good family motor.

You can just make it out parked in front of my Mums brand new Honda Express.

Think that you are correct - it does not look to sit low enough for a 2.3-16 to me either, on a second look. A spoiler on a cooking 190/190E would have been quite rare in period though, but nevertheless I think that you are correct

Thanks for the 504 stories. Yours is a good one! Ours was a carburettor one - I think that, after haggling a discount with Central Garage at Southbough Common it cost £1,700 and something, while the fuel injected version was something like £109 more, which my father didn't think worth the extra. In fact I think that he dodged a bit of a bullet, because although the Kugelfischer fuel injection system was ahead of its time, it wasn't terribly reliable. After Dad's good experience with a 504, one of his colleagues bought the FI version, and it proved quite troublesome - apparently at one time it was only returning 9 mpg!

Originally, all were 2 litres (I think 1971cc, if my memory serves me) the smaller engined 1.8 came later with a poverty spec that also deleted the independent rear suspension for a live rear axle. Diesel would have been a vey left field choice then - the Peugeot was again ahead of its time in having a diesel option, but although famed for its ruggedness and durability, it was a very agricultural and anaemic unit. No doubt I will be corrected if I am wrong, but I think that the diesel might only have been available on the 7 seat estate.

Another one from a rainy day in Derby in the 80s.

Relatively easy car spotting on this one. Rover SD1, MK4 Cortina, MK1 Cavalier and a Morris Marina/Ital can be picked out easily.

The Cortina is a rare "S" with the black rear trim. Available with the Pinto 2.0 or Cologne 2.3 V6. According to this, only 1 or possibly 2 Cologne's remain the UK...

Well, speaking of 70's London and a Lancia Flavia, Peter Gabriel was shot in his art designers Flavia in 1974 for his album cover, with a hose used to get the water droplets. The colour was added onto the b & w image afterwards.

There were a few actually

The Vauxhall viva had a fastback coupe version as did the Cavalier. Then there was the Vauxhall Royale coupe. We only had the Granada here and not the Taunos / Cortina coupe on the continent. The fly in the coupe ointment is of course the Morris Marina...... yuk

To be fair even the Marina Coupe was an improvement on the saloon. And it's Taunus, for the Ford. The Vauxhall was the Firenza.

What I HAVE learnt from this, is that there were some beautiful coupes back in the 70s & 80s: not just bespoke stuff, like the Manta or Z Cars, but coupe versions of boring family cars like the 929, various Datsuns and Toyotas etc. Nowadays everything seems to be designed from the ground-up as a coupe, rather than "OK, we've got a good saloon, now let's make a coupe out of it". I miss those days!
