Now that w a great photo. The firstperiod one with a Manta Gt/E in it??

Anyhow, for MAXIMUM points, in the builders yard behind the car part, there is a pickup with a hardtop. P100?.

AND... Tthe green car in the very background. Looks american. Any ideas???
Aren't there two gold Mantas? The hatch ahead of the coupe?
The coupe isn't a GT/E as it has silver wheels. It will more likely be a 1.8 Berlinetta.

I think the hatchback looks too big and might even have rear door handles. Citroen BX?

Blue car I am sure is a Fiesta Mark 1.

Green car in builder's yard - Peugeot 304 convertible?

Big hatch behind the Maxi? I think it could be something like an Opel Monza. A Citroen BX has a big thick C-pillar.

Could be a Monza, but I've convinced myself it has rear door handles. boxedin

I think that rear door handle is actually the leaf of the foliage.
It looks to me like the hatchback version of the Manta. Cue pointless anecdote....

My girlfriend (now wife)’s first car was a Manta Hatch GT/E Exclusive in metallic blue. Such a cool car even in the early 90’s. That and a 944S2 made up the coolest garage we have ever had. Even better than a Volvo estate and a VW Golf that we have now !! Ah well, happy days....

Good shout, and it would explain what looks like a 'split' front grille.

I'm not certain what it is, maybe Riley RM, but it definitely isn't a Pathfinder - they were a similar shape to an MG ZA, not with pre war style swept up front wings.

The wheels and the mirrors identify the blue car as a MK1 Fiesta............ That's IMHO of course!
This, the wheels are the key. The fence/ bush are creating noise.
Blue car is a Mk1 Fiesta - I owned one back in the day. Look at the side profile and compare with the yellow one across the railway.

Pick up in the builders' yard is a 504 (not 505 - they were saloons / estates only), or possibly a 404 but it looks to be rust free so must have been a fairly late model, judging by how quickly they rusted.

Across the track we have (front to back): Talbot Samba; Bedford Rascal; "A van"; Fiesta S; Ford Escort 3 door Estate; what looks like an early Sierra,; another car; a Cavalier Mk11 hatch and some more cars, possibly ending in another Sierra (white).

Surrounding the Manta(s) and Maxi there's a Fiat 126; Mk11 Asta; 3-door Chevette; Mk11 Escort 4-door; a Spitfire no later than a Mk111 (prior to Spitfire IV facelift); Nova 3-door; Capri Mk111; Maestro AA van; blue Toyota Hiace van.

Thanks - not sure why I wrote Pathfinder!

Somewhere in London is all I have for this one, nice Mk1 Grannie Coupe...

Yes, it's a Riley RM. Looks like a 2.5 litre with the longer bonnet; small rear window indicates an early model, so I'd say it's an RMB.

Definitely an Opel Manta hatch (i've had a fair few Monzas so know them well). Hard to see if headlights are quads or rectangular, if the former its possibly an Exclusive in "Platinum". This limited edition, and the regular Solar gold Manta GT/E, are one of the few everyday production cars I've known to be sold with body coloured wheels. Sounds gopping but looks ace.

isn't "a van" the panel van version of the MK3/4 Escort estate, not the 'normal' Escort van?

My angle on the 'other' side of the tracks.......

Front to back. Peugeot, Rascal, Escort Combi, Fiesta S, Escort Estate, Carlton, Acclaim, Cavalier 5 Dr, another car, Allegro, Chevette, 2 others and a Sierra.

It'll be 1987 onwards as that version of the Network Southeast livery wasn't introduced until then (the first version with the upturned stripes on the cabsides was introduced in '86). Another poster mentioned the incredible noise the class 50s make, having driven all fifty of them at full chat when I worked on the Western Region in the '80s I can vouch for that!
The noise of those things really was amazing,
I used to spend the summer holidays with my cousins at their place in West Byfleet and the mainline to the South Coast runs along the end of their street. On a clear day we could hear them coming from miles away, cousin and I would be playing football in the garden and as soon as we heard one in the distance we would run out the gate, leg it up the end of the street and climb up the oak trees that ran along the fence line. We used to be able to get high enough up the trees to see over the embankment and get level with the train as it would come through. These things were shifting, absolutely flat out. They always seemed to be working harder coming down from London , maybe the track has a slight incline through there?
As the train went through the noise was truly deafening , sometimes the drivers would see us in the trees and blast the horn!
Sometimes we would go to the station and hang around on the footbridge for hours just waiting for the 50's to come through..
Was about 10 at the time, happy days! smile

Right of the Manta Coupe looks like a 5dr Mk 2 Golf CL going by the hearing aid beige and steel wheels.

My view on the big coupe is that it's a Manta Hatch - they did have big rear side windows....

I think the blue hatch is a mk1 Fiasco.

Over the tracks, the car between the early Sierra and the Mk 2 Cavalier Hatch is, I think a burgundy Triumph Acclaim. Sticky out bumper and black grill on the top of the bonnet....

Hoovers...... as the Fifties were always known as. I preferred their slightly smaller but rortier cousins the 40’s, same engine but not quite as well developed.
Strange how these things go round, the fifties used to get panned by those ‘spotters’ from the western region who missed the Class 52’s.
The modern diesels don’t have the drama of any of them.
