Sorry no - I'm not at all familiar with East London I'm afraid, but strangely it reminds me of parts of Shepards Bush and Acton from family visits around the same time.

Interesting E London pic.

Any idea of the street name?

There was an Earl of Ellesmere in Poplar, E14 (according to What Pub), it was demolished in 2003.

Most of the tower blocks in the distance will still be there, although many now have retrofitted pointy roofs.
Looking at Ellesmere St and Brabazon st E14 nearby on Google maps, looks like similar flats in the area

I thought similar, bit they aren't quite the same - ones in the pic are a little wider & the balcony treatment's different.

Also you can't get the same angle to show the three storey block & the towers - road position could've changed through redevelopment though.

What must have been a fairly new DAF 66 coming out from under the bridge - quite exotic for Manchester in the mid 70's I'd imagine!

Market Square, Lichfield. The house in the background is Samuel Johnson’s birthplace (now a museum).

Nice picture, what's the car behind the Mini?

Based on RPI, £5400 in 1971 is equivalent to around £82k now. So may not have been such a great investment tbh.

I recon if you still had a 1971 911S today in good order it would be worth over £100K. I think that would have been a great investment.

Unless I'm mistaken every car in shot made in the UK? (and most not that far from Lichfield!)

A great investment - I don't think so. A wise investment - yes.

An average of 1% above RPI every year would give £140,000

A car isn't free to own, unlike a 1% above RPI investment.

I concur, but you have the use of the car whilst owning it, yes you have running costs, but depreciation, which is usually the biggest cost of ownership is the opposite.

Being able to use it and not being stung by depreciation is a great benefit, but never be fooled into thinking it's an investment, especially if it's not your only car.

I bought a car in Nov 2010 for just under £6,000. It's now worth £16,000, but I've lost money on it. Insurance, VED, MOTs, time-based maintenance. I've just about had "only pay for fuel" motoring, but that's it.
