I'm not sure what yo mean by 'charismatic' in relation to an engine, perhaps 'iconic' would be better. Either way, I reckon the Series A should be on the list together with the Ford Side Valve, Riley Nine, VW air cooled and the wankel.
No, charismatic isn't iconic. Ford's 1.0 Ecoboost is iconic, but won't be on this list.Edited by MarkwG on Tuesday 4th February 18:58

Am I allowed to nominate a single race car engine ? In which case - V16 BRM.
I'd agree (both for technical content and noise), and for similar reasons i nominate the Commer TS3 lorry engine.Or perhaps the Gobron-Brillié if we limit it to cars - here's a diagrammatic view of half its engine.
From a selfish point of view, I think I will nominate the engines in my current fleet....
BMW N53 - the last and most powerful NA straight six from BMW. Silky smooth and just keeps pulling
VW type 4 - simple, air cooled, twin carbed with that distinctive flat four sound.
Smart 700cc - three cylinder, turbo whistling gem. Engine pulls amazingly well, charasmatic sounding, just a shame what gearbox\ system it is mated to.
I will ignore the four pot diesel in my wife's car!!

Over the years my favourites have been , jaguar XK on webers , anything ford beginning BD A or G .
Anything with 5 cylinders, that warble is fabulous.
I have had a few 5 pots , a couple of Audis and about 5 volvos with and without turbos . My old neighbour said he used to love listening to my S70 T5 leaving in the early morning. I used to keep the revs down while negotiating the built up area then when I got out on the bypass I could give it some welly .
The neighour said the sound of the car going up the bypass was music to his ears , not loud or intrusive but a melodic warble . He was overjoyed on the day that I let him drive it !

Same here, I love a 5-pot warble, had a few on the run - straight/V/diesel/petrol/turbo/NA. That Volvo unit they put in the Focus ST/RS was a gem if you ignored the MPG. Would have loved an UR-Quattro but missed that boat. Anything with 5 cylinders, that warble is fabulous.
