Porsche 911 GT3 (991.2) arguably the greatest road car engine of the modern era. Cup race car derived, 9k rev limit and an induction noise to die for. Hearing this engine on full chat is shocking - should come with a government health warning. Oh, wait they want to ban them don't they!

Aside from the BRM v16 I challenge any true pher not to be impressed by the sound of a commer knocker on full chat.
Amen to that, a guy in our village (classic truck nut) has one and the first time I heard it going past our house was a WTF moment, it's such a rude sound!

No mention, as yet, of the Ford-Cosworth BDA - 16-valve, 2OHC, high-revving, the most successful rally car engine of all time.

What's not to love ?
The cost.... laugh

Otherwise, yep, the combination of Webers and cambelt whine of a BD in an RS1600 still makes me smile like a child.

Yes, when they let go, they don't mess around ! Years ago i was witness to one letting go at Goodwood chicane, naturally the Car [ mk 2 ] stopped, but bits of the engine carried on well past the pits wink
I was told that Roger Clarks once report for retirement on a rally was "alternator failure", it failed because the BD exploded! smile

Maserati/Ferrari F136 4.2/4.7 V8 - lovely revvy engine, great noise and power delivery, and surprisingly robust for its sophistication. Available for (relative) pennies in Maserati format...
Got one of them

Another vote for the XK, obviously.

The title doesn't say anything about it being a car engine, so I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Merlin. The sound of which still send a tingle down the spine.

Then the Imp's engine. Revs to the sky and back yet light enough you could pick up the complete long engine/transaxle assembly.
I'd make that any R-R V12 aero engine.

Packard 4M-2500 V12 marine engine, as fitted in the WW2 USN PT boats and RN MTB boats......utterly fabulous noise.

Or the one I heard recently at Winspeed in an E-Type, it sounded incredible and apparently goes as well as it sounds..

Going a bit off from the various lists above but I nominate the humble Austin 7 engine.

4 cylinder side-valve, 750cc and very nearly 100 year old design and people are still getting more and more power out of them. Yet so simple anyone can take one apart and put it back together.

Many that became well known started on them, (Lotus, BMW, Jaguar, Mclaren etc etc.)
